I think that there's a significant distinction between shipping and the other two things on that list, and they really shouldn't be classed together

I mean, I'm not sure that it's entirely fair to judge people based on authors & characters either, but I definitely don't think it's fair with shipping.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-11 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Meh.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-11 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
From what I can tell, some women just have a really hard time identifying with female characters.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-11 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Or, you know, they're straight women who are interested in reading about hot guys.

I think I do those things predominantly. Most of the female-author things I read are fanfic, if that counts for you.

I am a gay male though, so...

(Anonymous) 2018-04-11 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no, I am being judged by an anonymous person on the internet. This has literally never happened to me ever before!

... said no one ever.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-11 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Kinda hard to do that when 90% of m/m authors are female.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-11 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I thought the same thing, lol. If you only ship m/m good luck reading only things written by men.

I know, right. XD

Thank you. I think OP is a troll.

One of these things is not like the other.

Also, Misha looks like he's gonna swallow Jared's ear.

Nah, for the most part what someone likes isn't really telling of anything much(it might reveal a pattern, in like favourite genre, ship-type, character-archetype, etc).

I'll only start side-eyeing if someone like that hates on every female character in existence or acts like f/f is disgusting while m/m is the Holy Grail.

Otherwise people can like what the hell they want.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-11 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Agree. I only get judgey if all of the below criteria are met.

a) the person exclusively ships white male/white male pairings across several fandoms and doesn't seem interested in even a single het, femmslash or pairing w/ POCS

(b) the person has a long history of talking sh*t about female and/or POC characters, especially those who "get in the way" of their ship

AND

(c) the person repeatedly and vehemently attacks other ships, their shippers, and/or the show's actors/creators/writers.

Judge away, I don't care. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Have you met many people like that?

(Anonymous) 2018-04-11 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
So, you mean someone who does all three, but I think you must mean loves male characters exclusively, right? And like others in this thread mentioned, a lot of people who ship m/m, read m/m fic, which seems to be mainly written by female authors, unless you meant professional male authors for that first item on your list. It seems like there wouldn't be that many people that would meet all of these criteria. Maybe I'm wrong.

I'm happy to rec some authors!

(Anonymous) 2018-04-11 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Mine will typically be in the urban fantasy/fantasy scene, though.

Patricia Briggs (Mercy Thompson! Don't be fooled by the covers...they really aren't indicative of the books. Also, don't think it's really a love triangle. It isn't.)

Illona Andrews (Kate Daniels specifically)

Melina Marchetta has some good fantasy and realism works.

Kristin Cashore's Graceling series can be very cool and sad.

I really liked Carol Plum-Ucci as a teenager. Not sure how it aged.

Some of Holly Black's work is good. My favorite is Curse Workers.

The Matthew Swift series, which has some very interesting takes on urban magic, is penned by Kate Griffin.

Dark Life by Kat Falls I remember liking

Cinda Chima Williams was immensely popular among my cohort in middle and high school.

As was Sarah Dessen, whose books might have romance, but also focus on heavier things.

On the manga side of things, the author/artist of Fullmetal Alchemist is a woman. So are the creators of D.Gray-Man, Yamada and the Seven Witches (this one surprised me!), and Blue Exorcist.

I recently reread some of Carol Plum-Ucci's books and the only ones I still liked were the Christopher Creed ones. Sarah Dessen's books were a hit and miss upon rereading. The Truth About Forever was still fun, but not Dreamland or This Lullaby.

Same, and especially when said person is also hypocritically a SJW type.

Judge away. My M/M writing ass doesn't have to give a shit. :P

(Anonymous) 2018-04-11 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
Well, OP. Most of my fave characters are male and I pretty much exclusively ship slash. My fave author is Stephen King.

I'm also a feminist who is passionate about the rights of women and bringing up the status of women in society so they are equal with men.

What I'm saying is one's preferences, when it comes to media, does not necessarily dictate the rest of their life. For me, I separate the political side of my life that wants and does my best to make things change, and things that I just want to do for fun- like read hot slash. For the record, I love it when a film comes out with strong, interesting women and check every film I watch to see if it passes the 'Bechdel' test.

But I'm never going to stop reading slash fic, sorry.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-11 12:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, male authors typically don't write m/m.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-11 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, me too.

(I do slash, but not exclusively, and certainly not for this show.)
