Patreon advice

[personal profile] dani_phantasma 2018-04-26 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
So my brother and I are working on moving out to Colorado with the folks and i have to go search for a job again and since mom doesn't drive anymore I am concerned about transportation and how I'm going to get anywhere.

I don't wanna rely on Kaiti and her husband or on dad because that would stress people out so I wanna make a transportation fund and my job has started running low on payroll hours.
Soooo I started a Patreon. The banners kinda.. loud so I'm working on a new one. So I'm aware of that problem. I'm trying to work on putting out content but I feel a little discouraged. I have examples of my work.

https://www.patreon.com/JaybieJay any constructive criticism on how I can work on getting more patrons? (CONSTRUCTIVE criticism pls)

I'm not doing this because I want to like piss anyone off I just... wanna try and use what I can do to get some money while I search for a new job and look into benefits.

I'm not an expert but it seems to me that Patreon depends on already having a significant following, not for people to start off passing the hat around to strangers. Do you have a significant following for your work?

not really. I'm working on kicking off some comics.

* Do you have a tumblr or website where you're regularly posting your work? If not, I'd start one. Network with other artists as well as connect with the public.

* Right now, you're asking people to cough up some dough for an unknown artist, and why would they do that when there's so much content out there for free? Think about what you can offer that sets yourself apart from the crowd.

* When you're posting examples of the artwork you're proposing to provide people in exchange for their money, putting a bare bones sketch that looks like scribbles to non-artists first is probably not a good idea. This is supposed to be the free sample that gets people interested, so show them the good stuff. WIP sketches are for people who are already familiar with the end product. It's not terribly interesting when you aren't familiar with the end product.

Allright Thank you. Noted.

* I don't mean to sound harsh, but people who want to do art but can't afford to do it without financial support from others are a dime a dozen. Sad stories are sad, but that's for gofundme and one time donations, not regular monthly support. Telling people they can make your dreams a reality is... well, probably not as enticing as you think. It's not that people don't like to help, it's that most of the time, their money is limited and they have their own dreams to fund.

Show people what you're going to give them in exchange for their money.

* The second sketch is better, but it's out of context and hard to tell what's going on or why it's interesting. It looks unfinished. Is that what Patreon supporters are going to get from you? Why not show the first couple panels of your comic so people see the finished, final product and get an idea of whether or not it's something they want to see more of in the future?

* Consider writing your description of the comic like a blurb for a book. You know, the back cover or inside jacket copy that tells people what it's about, but in a way that grabs peoples' attention.

aaah now that you put it that way... I really do need to fix up my page. ;.;

Thanks for the honest advice. I'll try giving my page a rehaul.

I support one person on patreon, and it's because they make good tutorials for beginners. I found them on youtube where they have a number of free tutorial videos, so I know what their content is like, and their patreon offers more content plus exclusive extras like prints of their work.

It seems like the more followers you have on your free content, the more likely you are to have people support you on patreon. If you don't have a following yet, I'd probably look at developing that and seeing what kind of content people respond to. Tutorials, challenges, and sped-up videos of people creating art tend to do well on youtube. If you have an instagram or youtube account, keep your art separate from your personal stuff. I unfollow anyone who posts drama or a million pictures of themselves because I only want to see art. It also helps if you have regular posts, so if you have weeks where you might create three pieces and then weeks where you create none, space out your posting and post some progress shots even if you've already finished a piece. That keeps you in people's feeds.

I hope that helps.
