Question

(Anonymous) 2018-04-26 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Can someone explain to me how Ready Player One isn't just a worse version of Snow Crash?

I'll hang up and take my answer off the air, thanks.

What's Snow Crash?

Have you ever been in a fandom that you never actually read/watched/played?

(Anonymous) 2018-04-26 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Where are those sneaky fandom crashers at? Being in the fandom just to troll doesn't count. What fandom and why?

I don't know if I'd class it as being in fandom, but I consume a whole lot of fem!Shep/Garrus fanworks and comment on fic. I've never played Mass Effect.

Back in its heyday, I did this with Kingdom Hearts. I've still never played them. (I was a kid, idk if I would do that with a fandom now.)

Does watching only the first season of a show count? Because sometimes I'll start watching something and realize that I enjoy the fandom far more than the canon and drop the show itself.

I have also written some Supernatural PWPs without ever watching a single episode.

I've read a pretty fair amount of OUAT fic just because it's probably the single biggest f/f fandom out there and I like f/f.

Back when I was a huge anime nerd, I actively looked for yaoi fic from anime I never bothered watching or games I never played. I wouldn't say I was a BNF, never wrote any of my own (that I published, anyway) but if I thought two anime dudes were cute and liked how I understood their dynamic to be, I'd go for it.

Does it count if I did end up watching it? 'Cause I was kinda in the Supernatural fandom for the longest time before I actually started watching it. I read a lot of fic and wrote a bit too.

Overwatch. I've literally never played any video games except Sims, but it got super popular on my tumblr dash and I overheard my brother playing it on his PS4 so I read a bunch of fic, rbed some fanart, etc. Not so much anymore because the interest on my dash died down and I got out of my "read all fic all the time" phase for a while.

There were a couple of really good fics that I still reread, though.

I confess: I've spent a lot more time reading Homestuck fanfic than I've spent reading Homestuck.

Silent Hill. I love (and have drawn) fanart of it, but my (shaky) grasp of the lore comes almost entirely from the wiki. (I did recently-ish watch the first movie, though.)

Not exactly, but I roleplayed in a multifandom RPG.

I also beta read a fanfic once without knowing the canon. I spent a LOT of time on the wiki. (The person knew I was coming in as a novice, it was for a writing group. I actually really liked that he submitted fanfic to a writing group, I would've been wary of snobbery - but everyone treated it like an "original" story.)

Supernatural. I read some fic by an author I knew from other fandoms and really liked it, got pretty excited for a while. But it turns out I find almost everything about the actual show really hard to watch. I gave up after a few episodes and just found summaries if I was curious.

This is me with Cheryl/Toni in Riverdale atm, the show itself is not one I'm interested in sitting through hours of TV for but I am all over the ship, they have a story and dynamic I like. I have watched their scenes on youtube however.

Overwatch to an extent? I only ever played on the free weekends, but I like both Hanzo/McCree and Reaper/Solider76 and read a bit of fic for them for a bit.

I was in the Tales Of Series way before I actually played the games-- it was because of an ex-girlfriend. Then she told me about them and showed me pictures and I fangirled over them, even sort of glanced over the synopsis, then when it came to Tales of Vesperia, I wanted to play ti so much. So I finally did (2 years after the fact)

Now I've played all the games, but I started in that fandom with absolutely no knowledge save for good old Wiki

Nah. I have to have sampled the source material for myself before getting into the fandom.

Warhammer 40K. Well, wouldn't say I'm entirely in the fandom. But I read what I can about it, comment on it, and have read fics.

I was in the 'Eagle of the Ninth' fandom for a while (mostly just reading) without having seen the movie or read the book. Now i've done both.

Same for Hannibal (I saw a few eps but didn't finish the first season, but read the fic), and Game of Thrones (read the first five books, haaaaaaaated them, never watched the show, but love fic with Brienne), Sharpe (the Sean Bean historical thing), and Sentinel.

I've read The Professionals (1977) fic.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-27 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
I never watched the show. I don't actually think it was available in the US at the time (early 2000s). I stumbled onto a fic by looking at other stories by an author I liked in another fandom. I liked the characters in that fic and then looked up some information on the show. It seemed like a show I might like, so I read a bunch more fic.

Well, almost never - read Daredevil fic mostly for the sense exploration, but the film was frankly crap and the violence level of the tv show was waaaaaaaaaaay to high for me so I have no idea what canon is and what it isn't, I just read all the things.

I just got a snail mail letter from some conservative group and it looks like the ramblings of a crazy grandpa.

Also it's literally like 10 pages long. It's amazing.

Today was good

[personal profile] philstar22 2018-04-27 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Today was good. Got praise for my work from the attorney I've been doing small things for. He's going to have a lot more work for me and may be hiring soon. Another attorney is going to have some work for me and may be looking to hire. Also, we won a case I wrote the brief for. It was a good case and I feel proud of the work I did. I had a good long discussion with my mother, she apologized and is going to stay out of my medical stuff. Can't believe I found the guts to call her out, but I did, and it worked. Also, Cosby was convicted.

Also, I went to Chili's for dinner and had two margaritas (which there is like 6 because they give you the whole shaker). And I'm kind of drunk.
