(Anonymous) 2018-04-28 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)Maybe they feel your story was good enough to deserve a comment but not interesting enough to deserve a long, detailed comment.
That being said, I once got a comment which was nothing more than an emoticon. And I didn't reply to that one, because I didn't understand what it meant.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-28 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)I don't think it's hypocritical. We choose to write long stories and put them out there for others' enjoyment, and most will enjoy (or not) without saying a word. No one's under any obligation to comment, it's like a nice bonus if they do. That's how I look at it, anyway. You could do a A/N thank you to everyone who left comments if you don't want to answer each one individually, at least? ....guess that wouldn't work for a one-shot though...

Most authors would kill to get comments on their work, and let me tell you, if I got a slew of comments from people right now that were all "omg so cute" and "i loved this" and "update soon!!!!"s, I would positively shit my pants with complete delight that someone read and liked my work enough to say something to me about it, and I would thank every single one of those commenters. And then there's you with the cast iron balls to act like those comments aren't even worth acknowledging? Who the fuck do you think you are?

(Anonymous) 2018-04-29 03:52 am (UTC)(link)Exactly. Seriously, I hear fic writers complain all the time nowadays about how nobody reviews anymore, nobody takes the time to leave a comment on a fic they're enjoying...
...and then I see so many of those very same fic writers complaining because they got a comment that just said, "I love this!". Or they got critique. Or they didn't get critique. Or they got this sort of comment, or that sort of comment, and so on and so forth. It's to the point now where it seems readers can't win with some writers no matter WHAT they say, and feeling like they have to hit some sort of "perfect comment/review" checklist, so I totally don't blame some readers for going, "Screw it, I just won't comment at all, then."
The only kinds of comments I can agree with complaints about are, obviously, flames and "kill yourself" comments and things of that sort, spam, and somebody knowingly going into a fic that the tags and labels make abundantly clear they won't like and whining about why the author is writing pairing C/D when A/B is superior, or why they're writing a particular kink, or so on. Those kinds of comments would absolutely be annoying.
But beyond that, people either need to quit being so freaking picky, or if they want to restrict the sorts of comments and reviews they get, that's fine, they have the right to do that, it's their story and their comment section to moderate...but then they should also be prepared for the possibility that will lead to less reviews as a result.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-29 09:20 am (UTC)(link)Yes, exactly, exactly. I comment to let the writers now that the effort they put into writing the story is appreciated, and I try my best to tell them what it was that I liked about their work. I guess my mentality must be stuck in the pre-LJ era or something, because I never expect that an author replies to my comments, no matter how long and detailed they might be.
On LJ, I commented because it was the only way the author could know I read and liked their story. On FFN, I comment because it's the only way the author can know that I didn't backbutton halfway through it, and that I liked it. On AO3, I'll comment to let the author know exactly how much I loved their story, because if I've got nothing useful to say, I'll hit the kudos button. It does the exact same job as an "this is so cute, I love it".
I write in old and tiny fandoms where I'll count myself lucky to get three comments on a fic posted to AO3. I'll reply to all of them, including the ones that there's really nothing more than "aw, thank you" to say to, because over the years I've come to understand what the replies to my original comment eccho: that authors who "look down on" their readers by "not showing their appreciation" for comments are terrible, terrible people.

Boo-fucking-hoo. You don't have to reply to any of them. Get over yourself.
