I would say just leave a comment or a kudos or whatever you feel like really

Don't invest so much into this gratitude economy to the point where you imbue comments with a special uniqueness or something

(Anonymous) 2018-05-03 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
But! BUUUUUUUUUUT...! The author must be put in their place for not being a replier to all! That'll learn 'em, that will.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-03 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the same sentiment which says that readers who leave kudos instead of comments are LITERAL MONSTERS

(Anonymous) 2018-05-04 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Except you're indulging in amusing hyperbole and people don't really say that, but OP definitely is withholding comments based on which authors reply to their reviews.

yes seriously why do you have to engage in a gratitude-off with a stranger you have never interacted with. what happened to writing comments because you feel like expressing something

(Anonymous) 2018-05-04 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
THIS. Whenever I leave a comment, it's because I can't not leave a comment. I'm a fangirl. My enthusiasm needs the outlet of that little comment box. I'm not doing it because I feel obligated or because I expect gratitude or even a discussion with the author. I'm commenting because OMG IT WAS AWESOME AND I HAVE STUFF TO SAY ABOUT IT AHHHHHHH.

DA

That's what I really miss on my fics lately! Kudos are great and all but I don't know if the person is just casually clicking or OMGWOW!clicking it. So I assume it's the former :(

Hi, fellow redditor.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-03 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Whatever works for ya.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-04 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Good for you?

I only leave comments if I'm in the mood to write one.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-04 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Some authors don’t reply to comments because they’re snobby or entitled - I have severe anxiety and replying to comments will literally make me break out into hives. So there’s that.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-04 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I reply to all comments because it's hard enough getting comments at all, but there's only so many ways to say "hey thanks for reading and commenting" without going crazy.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-04 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
So if the author doesn't reply, they're ungrateful, but if they do reply, they're artificially boosting the amount of comments on their fic. Okay.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-04 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I wish this wasn't such a thing.

I reply to every single comment on my fics (well, non-troll comment), even if it's just an emoji, because I truly am grateful to have the readers I have.

Thanks to that thread the other day, I'll try to be a little less judgey about those who don't reply to comments I leave on their work, though, because it's possible it's NOT a sign of arrogance like I tend to assume. But I still won't leave a long comment on those fics if I'm not sure it's appreciated by the author (maybe they don't even read them? If they don't reply, no way to know... on both sides).

Do what feels right to you and try not to worry about it, I guess?

It's not necessarily an indicator that they aren't grateful. I understand it can make you less inclined to comment, but nobody owes you a reply.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-04 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
How I long for the day when fandom as a whole can admit that writers are not owed comments and commenters are not owed replies.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-04 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I don't bother commenting either if we're talking about a BNF with countless pages of comments already. Mostly because I would be mildly horrified if one of my fics got literally thousands of comments. I like discussing my fics but that's too much of a good thing for me.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-04 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
You know, if you don't feel like commenting that's fine, but if you want to say something and you don't for this reason? That's just stupid

I'm not a BNF by any means (thank god) but a fic I'm writing has recently become extremely popular to the point I receive between 100-200 comments per chapter

THAT'S A LOT

And I'm first and foremost an awkward, introvert nerd that gets easily overwhelmed. Looking at the number of comments scares me a bit, so I end up not answering to them most of the time.

But that doesn't mean I don't appreciate them, quite the contrary. I'm so grateful for every single comment! It's just that I don't really know what to say back, and copypaste a "thank you for your comment!" under every single one like a little machine, to me, is both a waste of time I could be using to write the next chapter people crave, and really dumb.

This is not meant to be a 'salty' response, I just want to give you a glimpse of what could possibly be like on the other side? Maybe some people are just full of themselves and they feel above the idea of answering their commenters, or maybe they are just like me. Shy and pretty much speechless at all this attention. Who knows.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-04 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
You could at least write an author’s note at the end of every chapter to thank your readers for their feedback. It’s a fast/easy way to let everyone know that you do appreciate their comments, but without actually speaking to anyone directly.

I can understand not having the time, energy or desire to reply back sometimes (especially to 100+ comments on every update), but there should be a quick/simple way for you to show appreciation somehow. An acknowledgment of some sort is nice imo ... because while authors are not required to reply directly to anyone, readers are also not required to review anything either. Feedback is very important for anyone who likes creating things, so I don’t think it’s dumb or a waste of time to actually show a little gratitude at times.

Granted, I have no idea what it’s like to make something that gets 100+ comments for each update. I’m lucky if I even get 10 comments, so maybe that’s why I feel this way and why I still reply to everyone (eventually). I’ve always felt that a reader’s time is just as valuable as an author’s time.

Just my opinion.

Yep! It's the solution I've come to already, just make a note every now and then to let people know that I read all the comments and appreciate them! On other fics I wrote, were I have much, MUUUCH less comments I like to take the time to answer. It's just a matter of sizes, really, when you somehow reach the point I got at with this fic, it's just unthinkable to reply to every single comment properly D:

(Anonymous) 2018-05-05 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
100-200 comments per chapter???? I'd say BNF. And if you appreciate them, drop a thank you in a note on the next chapter, ffs. You don't have to do it every chapter.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-05 08:33 am (UTC)(link)

I do that already : D I mean, no acknowledgement at all is kind of a dick move, I can def agree with that lol

But I still don't think I count as BNF? I mean, for what my concept of a BNF is-- It's just this particular fic that's very popular, but I hardly have a big following on my main platform and I don't feel like I have a flock of adoring fans (and I don't even want that lmao, sounds stressful), so idk. I guess we are just splitting hairs, here, at the end of the day. It's not that important.

OK, good -- seems like others in this thread don't think so, and I just don't get it. Social anxiety or no. Maybe no one OWES anyone anything, but we're talking about showing appreciation.

And okay I think I'm just jealous lol :)
