Rant/vent thread

(Anonymous) 2018-05-06 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
So, I just got off the phone with my boss, and I'm kind of annoyed.

It used to be that I had a set time I had to be at work. Then my boss started randomly asking me to come in 15 minutes early. Which I don't mind, but there was never any reason for it, I'd end up sitting around for 15 minutes doing nothing, basically. Then it'd be back to normal for awhile, then she'd randomly tell me to come in 15 minutes early again, where I would once again sit around doing nothing. After it happened a few times, I asked her why. Her response was "I'm the boss, and I'm telling you to". Okay, but...that's not a real answer? (I didn't say that to her, obviously.) Anyway, I dropped it at that point and haven't mentioned it since.

It sounds like no big deal, but as someone who has a difficult time falling asleep, having to wake up 15 minutes earlier can make a difference. Like I said, I wouldn't mind if there was a specific reason, and some consistency, but going back and forth for no reason makes no sense.

Anyway, just now she asked me to come 45 minutes earlier than usual. I didn't ask why since it didn't go so well last time. There's nothing special or out of the ordinary going on tomorrow, and I can think of zero reason why I need to come in 45 minutes early. I can almost guarantee that I'll be sitting around for 45 minutes doing nothing, and then she'll be back to asking me to come at regular time/15 minutes early, and probably now occasionally 45 minutes early (not sure why 30 minutes early hasn't come up yet). It seems to depend on what kind of mood she's in, and I just don't understand it.

Otherwise, she's mostly okay, and the job overall is great, but this is just so weird, and it annoys me.

This might be a good resource:

http://www.askamanager.org/

You could try approaching her and asking if there's a particular task she wanted you to do when you come in early, or if she feels you're managing your workload well. It's probably also a good idea to honestly assess yourself... ARE you managing your workload competently? Are you leaving early or taking extra long lunch breaks or something? Are you normally quite punctual?

If none of that applies, well... your boss doesn't sound very reasonable and there might not be any way to get around this. Particularly as she already gave you a non-answer. Might be a good idea to polish your resume and look around for another job.

SA - One more thing, if/when you ask why, be sure you don't sound whiny or critical. Go for surprised/concerned instead, and make it about YOUR performance because you want to be sure you're accomplishing all the tasks you need to accomplish. Don't make it about her unreasonable requests even if it's the truth.

I think so. I finish all my usual ongoing tasks on time, and anytime there's any new one-time type of project, I always finish it earlier than she asks. She constantly praises my performance and says how she doesn't know what she'd do without me. I'm never late...whatever time she asks me to be there, I'm almost always there 5-10 minutes earlier than that because I allow plenty of travel time and traffic is almost never as bad as I'm anticipating. Our lunch breaks vary depending on what's going on that day, and the time we leave does as well. I can't think of a single time I've ever asked for extra time at lunch (or been late getting back) or to leave early. In fact, there have been multiple times at the end of the day where we were almost done and she said I could leave, but I wanted to stay until everything was finished.

I definitely don't want to look for another job. I really enjoy the job itself and most of the people and the pay is signficantly higher than average for this field in this area. And she's fine most of the time (although a bit weird). I mainly just wanted to vent. Thanks though. :)

If you finish all your tasks on time/do projects needed/etc...why do you just sit around and twiddle your thumbs when you come in early?

I mean...why are you not working on projects you already have?

I mean, the could get done earlier, but they probably won't be let go earlier.

I am not the AYRT.

I had a boss who would pull this to try to get unpaid overtime out of their employees. If I was clocked in and getting paid I was working.

If I had been dragged out of bed early for an "important mandatory meeting", my butt was either going home, or chilling in the break room until my actual workday started.

Presumably anon doesn't have ongoing projects they can be working on before the boss gets there to give out the day's assignments, or they wouldn't be sitting there twiddling their thumbs.

It's not actually that uncommon in some lines of work to be given the bulk of your workload on a day-to-day basis.

First thing in the morning there's generally not anything to do yet. The previous day's tasks are finished the previous day, so unless there's an especially large project (which only happens a few times a year, and when it does, I'll absolutely work on it when I'm asked to come in early) there's not anything to do. My day to day tasks are pretty much always the same, but they depend on other people doing specific things first. So until Joe does X or Carol does Y, there's not anything for me to do.

Assuming she's not just jerking you around to feel powerful or something, maybe there is some reason why she wants you around early and she's just being terrible at communicating? For example, maybe she's coming in early, too, and doesn't want to be alone in the office, or maybe it has something to do with appearances to her boss/the public/whomever. Maybe she doesn't understand that if you come in early there is nothing for you do to because she hasn't really thought about how the work structure goes in your office. Maybe there's something she thinks you do that you actually don't. Maybe she's just really harried and figures if she's overworked, everyone else must be, too, and the extra time is needed. Does she ask other people to come in early?
