NBC is taking it, now

(Anonymous) 2018-05-12 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That said, why should Supernatural and TBBT get 10+ seasons ffs.

There's such a thing as wearing out your welcome, and those shows have long since done it.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-12 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
They're still making money

Shit, just look at the Simpsons - you could arguably say that the Simpsons has been bad for longer than BBT or Supernatural have been on the air

The power of Michael Schur compels you!

Popular speculation is that NBC decided to give B99 its final season to keep their latest comedy golden goose happy. He co-created B99 (why it wound up on FOX to begin with, I just never could figure out).

He was part of bringing The Office (U.S.), Parks and Recreation, and The Good Place to NBC, and since Universal owns both NBC and B99, I guess it makes sense for it to move to NBC.

Plus, Schur is part of the Saturday Night Live alumni network that's basically taking over NBC's comedy/late night division.

Frankly, I'm thrilled NBC gave it 13 more episodes, but the whole situation is flat-out weird. They basically cancelled it to make room to revive Last Man Standing, which seems like and even worse fit with FOX. I just don't see FOX's usual audience tuning in for it.

I mean, I get it. FOX wants to get its hands on the next "Roseanne." Except there's two problems:

1) Roseanne may be batshit insane, but she was also once a fucking talented comedian and she's currently surrounded by a lot of actors who've earned a ton of public good will in the time since the original run of her show ended. Tim Allen never had the talent Roseanne had at her height, was never all that likeable, and is not surrounded by people with a ton of public good will on this show.

2) Most people want to see a Home Improvement revival. THAT could be FOX's new "Roseanne." But no, they go for the vastly newer and inferior Last Man Standing for...reasons. A show that was middling when it was on ABC for six years, whose ratings were slowly sinking, and whose price tag was getting out of control because everyone was anticipating the big salary bump that a seventh season usually brings. About the only thing it has going for it is that its cancellation became some kind of weird conservative cause because Tim Allen took to Twitter and cried "prejudice" when ABC cancelled it.

The state being that networks cancel shows that don't have as many viewers? That has been happening since the beginning of time.

I don't know how true it is, but I've seen people say it's less because of viewership and more because Disney is updating the channel to fit their brand.

I find it more disappointing that TV execs will listen to fans more readily, as B99 has been brought home to NBC, than the US government will listen to its constituents.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-12 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Weeeellllll. You know. NBC has more of an incentive to.

US government, like TV execs, listen to the audience that gives them money. Not that confusing.

I've not watched it, mostly because when it was first being advertised it looked awful. Like super bad- I'm now aware that it was the fact the ads were cut that way to make it look bad (same channel has nearly put me off other shows I knew I wanted to watch)

(Anonymous) 2018-05-12 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I was so relieved when NBC picked it up! There was much joy!

Knowing the writer's patterns, the characters usually end in a really bad place in he final episode. So to have THAT kind of finale for the whole show? Unacceptable. I cannot live in a world where my B99 end up miserable! DX

13 episodes still isn't enough but at least I get to say good bye. (And I can watch this show over and over in Netflix when it's done. It's incredibly re-watchable.)

(Anonymous) 2018-05-12 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
You still got 5 full seasons.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-12 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
God, if I never another thing about B99, I'll be happy.

Same. I'm actually grateful the rescue came as fast as it did, so that people could move on to the next outrage.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-13 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Same though. The show is just... not as funny as people seem to think it is, and I stopped watching it a long time ago.

I agree.
BBT is such a terrible show, its popularity just baffles me. I tried to watch an episode, found it so puerile and unfunny didn't laugh once. I figured I'd watched a 'bad' episode so I tried another one. Same thing. I have a friend who loves the show. I have watched a few more eps as a result and am always left baffled as to why this show is so popular. I can only think it's because of the 'lol references to pop culture' and 'faux geeks are cool' thing it has going for it.
For a better show that does have interesting fun characters, is funny, and is about geek culture, I'd recommend 'IT Crowd'.
Brooklyn 99 is an absolute blast. Just hilarious!

NBC "saved" it and for better or worse more people watch Big Bang than they do B99.

It's funny how the internet loved BBT 9 years ago. It's like they caught their parents and grandparents watching the show and now it's ew, an old peoples show.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-13 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, I really enjoyed BBT when it started. I hate it now. And not because other people hate it or whatever, it's just changed so much now that everyone has been paired up.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-13 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Tbh, I get why people are upset and it sucks when a show you like is cancelled, but I also don't really see the point in comparing it to shows on different networks that got renewed. On Twitter I saw a lot of 'B99 gets cancelled but Riverdale gets renewed' complaining, like well yes but one is on Fox and one is on the CW which has a lot lower ratings bar to clear. And it's not like BBT getting renewed affected B99 at all, they're on different networks so BBT isn't 'taking' B99's place at all. At least complain about the shitty Fox shows that didn't get cancelled, basically.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-13 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
This. I have never understood that whole comparison either. One doesn't have squat to do with the other.

And whether people are ranting about other shows on the same network or ones that are on a different network entirely, I hate that people have to tear down other shows because theirs didn't make it or aren't as popular. Maybe you (general "you") don't like show X or get its popularity, and that's totally fine. But the fact remains that others DO watch show X and it IS popular for a reason. You can't control what people like, nor does the type of TV shows one likes automatically indicate anything about them as people.

Not to mention, if somebody wants others to get interested in a show that is struggling in terms of popularity/ratings, mocking other shows and their fans isn't exactly the best way to entice new fans on board. It's more of a turnoff than anything else, as it makes people think the show/fanbase is obnoxious and snobby.

All of that being said, I do like what I have seen of B99, and I am glad for the cast/crew/fans that it got rescued from its cancellation.

This all happened two days ago, how did this secret get made and published so fast?

(Anonymous) 2018-05-13 11:18 am (UTC)(link)
Easy. They could have made and submitted it yesterday, just before the old submission post closed. By luck of the draw or case's decision, it ended up in today's post.
