It doesn't help at all that that colour/shade looks terrible on her, yeah.

literally the only thing I know about this movie is that everyone I know who's seen it thinks the dress is ugly. all I know.

Here's more:
The effects are bad. Really bad.
There's a plot device that can literally transport people to different locations in time and space.
The character designs are shit.
The Beast likes to read, so he didn't give Belle the library he just snarks on her reading tastes and goes "Oh btw I have a library." So she doesn't help him grow by teaching him to read, he just reads the classics because of course.

I agree, it does look cheap - especially compared to the beautiful Broadway version of the costume. Was it perhaps intended to be more historically accurate, I wonder?

(Anonymous) 2018-05-29 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Woo boy, not even close. It’s hard to pinpoint when the film is set, but with the facepaint and powdered wigs in the flashback to when the beast was cursed, somewhere around 1750-70ish, maybe? So...

It’s British, not French, but you get the idea.

Try the (internet-famous) costume redesigns by Shoomlah on DeviantArt if you want to see what a more historically accurate Belle might have looked like, while still... you know, looking like Belle.

the costuming for this gown in particular was an epic foobar, don't blame the costume designer. Blame the actress. She didn't want to wear a corset and threw a hissy. The rest of her outfits had soft corsets/stays which is honestly pretty historically accurate, but the ball gown would have had to have a corset and panniers and a hoop skirt to fit the period.

Emma Watson wasn't having it. It wasn't "Feminist." She insisted the design not include a corset. In fact, they let her, not the costume designer, do the gown.

Now, being a designer myself, I'm sure the costume designer was gritting her teeth and being very polite the whole time. And after the movie came out, she couldn't even really defend herself or the gown. Because not only is this gown the wrong color to match the movie or do good things for the actress' SKIN TONE, it's the wrong period, thus the wrong shape and doesn't have the under structure to really support the gown even as it is! Then there's the glitter. The glitter they had to enhance with CGI.

Disney costume enthusiasts were furious and dug to find out how it happened especially since all the other costumes were actually the correct period and historically accurate! It wasn't pretty.

OMG YES

I agree 1000% with you. I hated everything about this gown — from that awful banana yellow color to the tacky prom dress design... Ugh, that dress is just so ugly.

It was such a wasted opportunity to create something beautiful and memorable (like Cinderella’s live action blue dress) imo. I really wish the ball gown had been more gold/bronze or at least a softer/flattering yellow. Also, I would’ve wanted the gown to actually look semi-historically accurate. Tbh, I don’t love any of Belle’s costumes in this movie. They each clearly have EW’s crappy taste splattered all over them. :/

(Anonymous) 2018-05-29 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Did she have influence over the movie's costuming? I remember that she refused to wear a corset (which is cool) but idk. She just doesn't look like Belle to me, and her acting/singing was pretty meh. Not that the role required any amazing acting, but I found her underwhelming.

And I like Emma Watson, she seems like a great person.

I know the Academy Awards are bullshit, but I was so mad that BatB was nominated for costumes just because of that monstrosity of a dress.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-29 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It moved very well, and that was the only thing I liked about it. The color didn’t flatter her, the “no corset” thing was stupid because they were foundation garments and I doubt she didn’t have some kind of bra on, which is what a corset is for. I’m half-convinced the design was picked to be easy to copy on the cheap, the better to sell at Disney Stores to little kids.

It’s weird because Belle’s costumes didn’t draw much on any existing “practical” historical costumes. Yeah, sometimes women would temporarily tuck their skirts up to keep them out of muck, but if they did manual labor all the time and were worried about muck, they wore shorter skirts or even just their shifts to do stuff like plant crops. I kept thinking Watson must’ve tripped a lot over her wadded-up skirt that she wore in the village.

+1

(Anonymous) 2018-05-29 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I knew the film was going to be bland but was expecting it to serve at least some costume porn visuals and not this prom dress from banana hell.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-30 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
the cinderella dress was just as ugly and i don't hear nearly as many people bitching about that, why is it this remake that's getting all the complaints?

(Anonymous) 2018-05-30 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Different people have different taste, I guess. Cinderella’s dress was gorgeous imo (although, nothing like the animated film tbh). Where as I think Belle’s gown turned to be a cheap looking banana yellow nightmare. But hey, that’s just my opinion.

Why all the complaints? Well, maybe because most of us here grew up loving the animated film and have a lot of ~feelings about it. I really loved Belle’s gold gown in the cartoon — it was truly iconic and deserved a better live action interpretation.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-30 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
What? Cinderella's dress was BEAUTIFUL. People were bitching about the corset situation in that film and the actress looking too unnaturally skinny, but at any rate, the dress was gorgeous and seeing her dance in it was really lovely.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-30 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
the live action cinderella had fantastic costume design

fight me

(Anonymous) 2018-05-30 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't like the butterflies on the Cinderella dress. They looked tacky. Other than that, the dress was nice, but I still like the cartoon dress better.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-30 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
Probably because a lot more people actually saw Beauty and the Beast. Compare their box office takings - BatB made more than twice what Cinderella made and the hype was crazy, too.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-30 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I liked the movement in the dress. I thought that was pretty.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-30 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
My first thought with this dress and the live action Cinderella one with the horrible shiny material were that they were going with designs that were cheap to reproduce on a large scale for costumes. I noticed that the informal clothing and other character's formal dresses were a lot more detailed and interesting from a design point of view. Definitely explains the tacky butterfly things on the blue one and the super simple cut of this dress. It's meant to appeal to little girls who want to look princess-y.

It's true and you should say it.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-30 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
YES, thank you! I’m so glad this secret was made. I was just thinking about this hideous dress the other day and honestly ... I’ve seen pretty gowns at JC Penny. Such a waste :(

(Anonymous) 2018-05-30 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It's very current fashion. And I hate that, because current fashion for these types of dresses is very... watered down? I wish I knew how to describe it better, but solidity, boldness and sleekness are sacrificed for bunched up texture, certain angles across the chest/arms and etc.
