"I'm not a big fan of opera, but I don't like the way actual trained opera singers sound!"
No shit.

And it's not much of an excuse that she's meant to be some untrained newbie when the whole point is that, wow, wtf, how come this chorus girl has such a well-trained voice, on top of natural talent? (Spoiler alert - the stalker in the walls has been giving her singing lessons). So no, she's not going to sound like a milquetoast pop starlet.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-07 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt

It's not a classical opera though. It's a modern musical written by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The majority of the singing does not require operatic performance, because they're just cheesy love ballads written in the 80s.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-07 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Taking a look at the score for the title song, I'm going to have to respectfully disagree.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-07 10:19 am (UTC)(link)
DA - Imo that one is the most 80s ballad of them all.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-06 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
lmao, of course she's going to "look the part" more than theatre actors who play the character, since most musicals don't actually give all that much of a shit about being visually authentic when it comes to casting roles.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-06 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved her voice, too. Also not generally a fan of opera. Also, since most people aren't, it kind of makes sense they would choose someone like her for a movie meant for general audiences.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-07 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. They were going for broad appeal. That still doesn't explain letting Gerard Butler sing, but Emmy is pretty and doesn't sound terrible.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-07 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think Sarah Brightman sounds operatic at all, just vaguely thin and howling.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-07 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
She doesn't. I also really don't enjoy her voice.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-07 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Same. Also, I once told some folks I thought Carlotta sounded better than her, and they looked at me like I was an alien.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-07 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, well. Much like Tim Burton after him, Andrew Lloyd Webber never saw a story he couldn't shove his then-wife into.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-07 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
I truly love Sarah Brightman but secretly believes she sounds like Miss Piggy. At least in Phantom.

I actually really love Sarah Brightman, though I've never watched Phantom or listened to any of her songs from it. I like her operatic stuff, but I do kind of prefer her more pop-style songs and her covers of songs from other musicals. Mr. Monotony is one of my favorites.

Ooo what are your thoughts on REPO! The Genetic Opera?

[personal profile] cakemage 2018-06-07 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
I actually haven't seen it, because I can't handle gore and from what I've read it gets pretty messy in that department. I did read a long, detailed summary of it, though, and I thought it was really cool that Sarah Brightman got to play such an interesting character with such an epic death scene. Her eye-gouging and suicide were beautifully spiteful ways of saying "fuck you."

(Anonymous) 2018-06-07 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I actually liked her as well, but I also have to admit that Christine is one of the two main characters it makes the most sense to have sound genuinely operatic. Since she's, you know, an actual opera singer. A novice one, yes, but still. Her and the Phantom are the two you'd think would need to sound the part, since the Phantom both trains singers and later performs on stage himself. And Carlotta to an extent. We're supposed to find Christine better than her, but Carlotta did manage to become Prima Donna at the opera house, so her singing can't be that bad. Everybody else is a ballerina or a nobleman or a manager, but those three actually are supposed to be opera-class singers.

Granted, this isn't actually an opera itself, it's a musical, so there's leeway. And you want the thing to sound unified, so everybody needs to be on a similar sort of level. I just find it a little bit funny that you picked the actual opera singer among the characters to criticise for sounding operatic.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-07 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I've no idea who this woman is, since I'm not a big Broadway fan, but I do like opera and I agree that too much vibrato can be kind of annoying and distracting

(Anonymous) 2018-06-07 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Big nah from me. She is pretty (in a bland sort of way) and her voice does sound nice, but she's not opera. And also, she has exactly one expression for the WHOLE DANG MOVIE

(Anonymous) 2018-06-07 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I agree. She was definitely at the ingenue end of the Christine spectrum, but that's fine. And the Phantom was such shit in the movie that she looked and sounded pretty good, considering!

(Anonymous) 2018-06-07 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Christine is supposed to be well-trained, though. Because the Phantom has been training her.

But that's beside the point, which is mainly that I can't stand Rossum's Christine because the way she pronounces some things sounds awful to me - her "I" sounds like "oy" and I can't deal with it. "Inside my moind." No thanks. (Yes, I know this is just my accent conflicting with her accent. Doesn't make it less annoying.)

(Anonymous) 2018-06-07 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
So many of my favorite bootlegs have been taken down that I don’t have links to the range of voice types who have played her, but as for “looks the part”— how so? I mean, look

I actually agree with you, I think that the movie did a very good job-- There is only one other treatment that I think did just as well-- it was a made for TV movie back when I was like 10 (so early 90s) and I loved it so much, but I cannot for the life of me remember anything other then it was Phantom of the Opera story in TV movie format, and it was a two parter, I remember that as well.

You’re thinking of the tv miniseries based on the Yeston/Kopit musical Phantom, with Charles Dance as Erik and Teri Polo as Christine. The original cast of the musical had Richard White, who voiced Gaston in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, as the Phantom.

oh my god

Thank you so much anon-- that is the nicest thing that anon has ever done for me. I love you for telling me about it, the exact name and everything. I am going to re-look it up and see if it is like anything that my ten year old nostalgically remembers
