I have said the same thing - I can enjoy these movies as an AU, it is about the only way it makes sense to me. I find Legolas and Thranduil interesting in these films, but there is no way that Legolas is the same Legolas in the LOTR films. Feels very much like an AU.

That being said, even as an AU, there was not enough plot for that much film time.

Not gonna lie, OP. I was disappointed that your secret contained the letters BOFA* but no "Deez nuts" joke.

*And yes, I know in this context it stands for Battle of the Five Armies.

OP, and i'm not sure what BOFA has to do with "deez nuts." The only thing I know about deez nuts was that he/she/it was a fake political candidate.

That was actually my first thought bc I'm only vaguely familiar with LOTR as a whole ad never saw the Hobbit movies. So reading "I will never forgive Jackson for BOFA" made me laugh.

BOFA has the most stupid CGI battles and stunts, and characters and events that aren't in the book, so yes I'd agree. My favorite is the first one, because it still pretty close to the book and also actually about the hobbit, about Bilbo.

What bugs me the most about these films is that sometimes you can see how much potential they had. Because there are loads of good actors involved who are all trying their best. And the costumes, sets, props are still gorgeous. Some of the scenes, even in BOFA, are pretty moving. But then there's some of the romance/jokes/monsters that are so cheesy they ruin the rest.

I can appreciate the first one but even that one had issues. But then I dislike LOTR too for character assassination. By BoFA, all I wanted was an engaging action set-piece that showed elves, dwarves, and humans fighting together, and it failed even that.

Although, after watching Lindsay Ellis' new video essay on the Hobbit, I do feel more charitable to PJ and company.

Was it ever going to be a great film? The end of the book is depressing, and the adaption being made into a trilogy kind of forced the shittiest bits into one movie.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-17 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
this question fundamentally boggles me

tragedy can be great film, anon

hell, the Rankin/Bass animated hobbit is thin on everything except 1) bilbo's character growth and 2) the heart-wrenching tragedy of Thorin learning to respect bilbo's priorities and regretting the horror of war, too late not to die of the war wounds he's earned, but not too late for a bittersweet reconciliation and forgiveness

and it fucking NAILED those two things, and I love it forever. the PJ version had the chance to really enrich that sequence with the arkenstone plot, which the R/B didn't have time for, but instead they botch it completely

otoh giving all the other shit they changed, if you really think it couldn't have been "a great film" with "a depressing ending" they could have changed that! let thorin learn his lesson and have a proper homecoming at last.

The trilogy structure 100% ruined it, yes, because of the hollow drama they had to gin up at arbitrary points in the runtime instead of following actual dramatic beats that were pretty solid in the 2 movie plan, but if you think the ending of the book was "the shittiest bits" just because some of it was *sad*, I don't know what to tell you
