Or maybe they're kids who think dumbass things because they're kids, and kids always think dumbass things? and as they grow up they'll be slightly less dumbassed because they're not kids anymore?

I mean, the Baby Boomers said the same shit ("never trust anyone over 30"), so this isn't even, like, a new issue.

It's not the usual dumbassery though. The problem is that they're calling adults in fandom pedophiles. They've even gone after published authors like John Green, since he writes about teenage relationships, calling him a pedophile. It's pretty ugly.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-17 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not saying it's not stupid.

And OP didn't actually say that they were only, exclusively, specifically limiting their comments to the "pedophilia" stuff, so I think I'm justified in talking about the more generalized comments about disliking older people in fandom.

I fucking hate this "all kids say dumbass things" meme because it isn't fucking true

every generation has SOME kids who say dumbass things, and those are the ones you hear from, but you know what? I was a dumb teenager in fandom and I didn't ever run around saying all adults were horrible, or being in ship wars, or bashing female characters, or WHATEVER

if I thought dumb stuff that I've forgotten about, there is no record of it because I had the good sense to lurk and listen and understand community norms before I opened my fool mouth, and also didn't feel the need to rush into conflict to harass and control other people

kids like me fucking exist, and it's not HOMG UNPOSSIBLE to expect teenagers to display a few specks of critical thinking or consideration for others. they're old enough to start learning how to behave as independent people in low-stakes situations

TLDR "Kids will be kids" is almost as bad as "boys will be boys". don't enable the suicide-baiting, power-tripping, egotistical little pricks

I do not know where they ever got the idea that there were only young people participating in online fandom. We old codgers have been here this whole time, back when the Internet was a baby.

I'm in my early 30s and when I got into fandom in what must be the Stone Age to these kids I remember desperately concealing my age because I wanted the older people to think I was cool. And I certainly didn't feel particularly cool in my early-mid teens!

So it's a little weird to me that it seems to have flipped now. I was well aware of things like the Star Trek fandom pre-dating my own birth by several years so it wasn't shocking to me that there were adults around in fan spaces.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-17 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here! The only time (as a teen fan) that I encountered that sort of mentality was when adult fans were cocky towards teen fans. It was easy to counter with "well, why are you in a fandom for kids?" But it's not like anyone actively felt that way.

I never revealed my age in fandom! I'm with you!

(Anonymous) 2018-06-17 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I got into fandom much earlier (my parents had taken me to cons as a kid and I got involved in internet fandom as an 18-year-old college freshman) but I had a very similar experience. There were very few kids and teens at cons when I was a kid and teen, and most people I interacted with online in those early years were older than me. I would try to be vague about my age and the fact that I was in college. When I ran into a teenager (who actually admitted to being a teenager), I would think it was so weird and maybe not a good idea that they were openly admitting to being so young. I was always hyper-aware that fandoms for Star Trek, Star Wars, and Doctor Who, and things like fanfiction and dressing in costume at a con were older than I was, and I had no claim to having invented anything fannish.

I think the flip may be partly due to the larger proportion of younger people in fandom these days. I think the internet makes participating in fandom as a teen much easier, since you don't need money, transportation, or permission the way you would if you wanted to go to a con or a club meet-up or other event. I think Harry Potter also brought a lot of kids into fandom (kids who are now adults, of course).

Another thing may be the fact that age is not readily apparent online, so people are prone to assume most everyone else is like them - "If I'm 16 and doing this, then so are the other people doing this, probably, right?" - even if you know, intellectually, that isn't true. There may also be a bit of willful self-delusion going on. "I don't want to be talking to weird adults, so I will just tell myself everyone is my age.) Finally, there may be some fannish spaces that happened to become more youth-centric (tumblr??? I don't know) and that led people to assume all internet fandom, and by extension, all fandom, is the same.

Where is this a thing? The very few times age has even come up in any conversation some people have been surprised, but other than that no one has ever given a fuck.

As they get older and wiser there will be new generations taking their place, thinking no-one has ever understood the world quite like they do. It'll even have a hint of truth, even though we've all been there.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-17 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)

People keep saying this is a thing, but all I ever personally see is twentysomethings having a heart attack if someone under 18 follows their porny blog. Anyway, I think both groups are rather silly.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-17 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It is a thing and the reason people have heart attacks over underage people following their porn blogs is because of the inevitable wank that follows because tumblr antis hate taking responsibility for themselves and love to use misogyny and homophobia to defend their fake woke puritanical agenda.

1. They are either going to grow out of it, and/or 2. come up with a hypocritical reason why the same gatekeepy standards shouldn't apply to *them.*

(Anonymous) 2018-06-18 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I almost feel bad for this but sometimes I wish the lil shits who go around making false accusations and keeping 'receipts' on people (I honestly kinda hate that term for that meaning and wish it would die because imo using it for 'proof this person is bad' kinda encourages or enable the creeps who keep records for blackmail and callout reasons) would experience what it's like to be falsely accused of something and be ostracized and dehumanized based on the jury of public opinion for like an hour or a day.

Just so they understand why it's such a shitty thing to do to someone. It may sound cruel but people have fucking DIED of this bullshit. I wish they would have to look those peoples' loved ones in the eye and read all the gross bullying and suicide baiting they did to drive the person to that point. They wouldn't be so brave, I bet, when their nose is smeared in the damage they've done.

Not to just one person, to a family, friends, and even to a whole community that person was a part of. Take away the power of anonymity and remind them they destroyed a human being, and by extension, hurt a family.

This shit is not a motherfucking game

(Anonymous) 2018-06-18 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
It'll taste delicious when it happens. Stupid fucking brats. Learn what a goddamn pedophile actually is before you talk shit!

(Anonymous) 2018-06-18 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
I understand how young people need spaces to explore their lives / developing brains / sexuality without older people around. There is a reason for age bared spaces or even age mostly excluding spaces (there may be a few outliers in high school or college or uni but for the most part it’s people the same age).

However, taking an open space like an internet message board and declaring it “only for these people” is not okay, and trying to exclude other by using accusations of pedophilia is repugnant and frankly ethically shitty.

You can’t police other people’s interpretations of fandom. Make your own locked comm for heavens sake.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-19 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
30? LOL, with the way tumblr discourse goes, people who are 21 will be the next target.
