Solo was fun but unambitious (which is fine! I liked it!) TLJ is flawed but magnificent.

That said, you're giving the whiny pissbabies way too much credit. Solo was dropped in between some truly juggernaut box office blockbusters (DP2 and Infinity War, among others) and was marketed really poorly and in a shorter period of time than the other SW movies. Plus, there really wasn't anything to the marketing except "come be nostalgic about Han Solo! without harrison ford!" and that's just not as huge a proportion of the market as Disney apparently thought. If they'd played up the space western hijinks more (or just given the movie to Lando!!!! the much more well-known and bankable star!!!! in a cape!!! whose story we don't know already!!!) I think it would have drawn much bigger crowds.

Yeah, there were a lot of factors at play in Solo not doing well. (For the record, I really enjoyed it! Not enough to go see it a second time in the theater but I'll probably buy it when it comes out)

But between releasing it in a time packed with other big movies that hit much of the same target demographic for Solo, releasing it so close to TLJ, not marketing it particularly well (I only really started seeing anything for it like two weeks before release and I know a bunch of people who've basically said they had no idea it was coming out yet), and all the reports of how badly the production had been going (replacing directors, re-shoots, etc) it's not at all surprising the movie didn't do well. It would've been more surprising if it had.

I guess if nothing else it's proven that just slapping a Star Wars label on something doesn't mean people are going to turn out in droves to see it no matter what.

Also regarding the scheduling: while in the George Lucas era, SW was released in May (I saw someone arguing that May thus made sense for Solo), Disney has already made a trend with its ownership of them by releasing them in December. That's when TFA, RO, and TLJ all came out. That's when IX is slated to be released. It just didn't make any sense to release Solo in May unless Disney was trying explicitly to bury it for some reason (I've also seen people suggest they didn't want it competing with whatever other movie it is they've got slated for December).

I really think if they'd gone with the established release precedent, giving a little more space between it and TLJ as well as the rumors of how badly the production was going, and given it better marketing the numbers would have been much better.

the release clutter isn't all Disney's fault, some of those other movies had their scheduling change around too, but yeah, I def agree either keeping up the december trend or at LEAST shooting for May 4th would have been better

who's actually remembering the original release date all these decades later? May the 4th is the day the vast majority of the fanbase actually thinks of as Star Wars Day now

I don't mean the original release date. I mean the George Lucas-era Star Wars movies in general. Even the prequels were released in May.

I loved that Solo came out in May. I understand that Disney wants December to be Star Wars month, and I do understand why, but since all the pre-Disney SW movies came out in May, walking out of Solo into the summer sun just felt right.
