Lol. Poor weak women. Their fragile minds are so easily controlled by male fans.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-17 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
If that was the case I'd expect to see much less gay porn. And yet.

I think AYRT is being sarcastic...

It's very hard to tell sometimes.

I don't think OP is arguing that male fans literally mind controlled the rest of the fandom into line, but a vocal minority of entitled fans shrieking about how something is the worst thing ever can absolutely discourage the growth of a fandom just because it creates such an unpleasant environment.

idk even know what's going on w Star Wars fandom anymore honestly

(Anonymous) 2018-06-17 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I enjoyed the film too, OP. Not sure why the outrage in certain quarters of the internet. Maybe it's because I didn't have a preconceived notion of what a younger Han would be like?

I thought the film was fun, I appreciated the lower stakes (ie., no planet destroying guns this time around), and I liked looking at the Star Wars world from a different vantage point.

I understand that the Solo movie got pretty positive reviews overall (boring and formulaic at worst, but entertaining and solid generally), including from Star Wars fans. The problem was that the film was underhyped, I think, which seemed to have been a deliberate strategy for some reason that really backfired. Probably would've helped if they didn't release it so soon after the previous film.

I went to see it with my brother and we liked it too. He even preferred it to both TFA and TLJ.

My main/only squabble with this one was Han Solo himself. He wasn't as charming as the original. Which I understand, because the original was Harrison Ford, but still kind of a bummer if he's the main character.

Like someone else said, it was nice to just get away from all the Empire vs Rebellion stuff. I enjoy it but part of what makes SW great is that they've always hinted at a much larger universe, it was fun to finally see more of that.

Attack of the Vlones is a really low bar

(Anonymous) 2018-06-17 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry nut no, this wasn't a good movie. It was painfully mediocre.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-17 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
That's just your opinion. Plenty of us think it was great.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-17 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that gives male OT fans way too much credit. I think there were a variety of factors at play in Solo's performance, none of which is the silver bullet that explains it completely. I also don't think it's a good tactic to suggest only male OT fans are the ones with problems with the Disney SW movies (most of which I've liked). It just adds to the divisiveness and I'm tired of that.

As for Solo itself, I overall liked it. It was never going to be a movie for me because I'm more of a Jedi/Force kind of SW fan and I don't like heist movies in general, but I thought it was generally good and I'm glad I saw it.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-17 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't go to see it because I just didn't give a fuck about it. I don't care all that much about any kind of prequels to begin with, and although I like Han Solo as a character I don't feel the need to know his backstory.

I might watch it in the future, but if I do it'll be just for Donald Glover.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-17 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
The loud, obnoxious male OT fans only make up a small percentage of the audiences for TFA and TLJ though. And they HATED TLJ but that still made a boatload of money. And actually a bunch of them really liked Solo, so I'm not really sure what you're on about.

Disney massively under marketed this and it's just been six months since TLJ. Star Wars fatigue is the biggest culprit and it's better for Disney and Star Wars in the long run that audiences skipped this one off origin story instead of burning themselves out on the franchise when there's more to come.

Solo was fun but unambitious (which is fine! I liked it!) TLJ is flawed but magnificent.

That said, you're giving the whiny pissbabies way too much credit. Solo was dropped in between some truly juggernaut box office blockbusters (DP2 and Infinity War, among others) and was marketed really poorly and in a shorter period of time than the other SW movies. Plus, there really wasn't anything to the marketing except "come be nostalgic about Han Solo! without harrison ford!" and that's just not as huge a proportion of the market as Disney apparently thought. If they'd played up the space western hijinks more (or just given the movie to Lando!!!! the much more well-known and bankable star!!!! in a cape!!! whose story we don't know already!!!) I think it would have drawn much bigger crowds.

Yeah, there were a lot of factors at play in Solo not doing well. (For the record, I really enjoyed it! Not enough to go see it a second time in the theater but I'll probably buy it when it comes out)

But between releasing it in a time packed with other big movies that hit much of the same target demographic for Solo, releasing it so close to TLJ, not marketing it particularly well (I only really started seeing anything for it like two weeks before release and I know a bunch of people who've basically said they had no idea it was coming out yet), and all the reports of how badly the production had been going (replacing directors, re-shoots, etc) it's not at all surprising the movie didn't do well. It would've been more surprising if it had.

I guess if nothing else it's proven that just slapping a Star Wars label on something doesn't mean people are going to turn out in droves to see it no matter what.

Also regarding the scheduling: while in the George Lucas era, SW was released in May (I saw someone arguing that May thus made sense for Solo), Disney has already made a trend with its ownership of them by releasing them in December. That's when TFA, RO, and TLJ all came out. That's when IX is slated to be released. It just didn't make any sense to release Solo in May unless Disney was trying explicitly to bury it for some reason (I've also seen people suggest they didn't want it competing with whatever other movie it is they've got slated for December).

I really think if they'd gone with the established release precedent, giving a little more space between it and TLJ as well as the rumors of how badly the production was going, and given it better marketing the numbers would have been much better.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-18 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
the release clutter isn't all Disney's fault, some of those other movies had their scheduling change around too, but yeah, I def agree either keeping up the december trend or at LEAST shooting for May 4th would have been better

who's actually remembering the original release date all these decades later? May the 4th is the day the vast majority of the fanbase actually thinks of as Star Wars Day now

I loved that Solo came out in May. I understand that Disney wants December to be Star Wars month, and I do understand why, but since all the pre-Disney SW movies came out in May, walking out of Solo into the summer sun just felt right.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-18 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't see it because the only things that looked interesting about it were the visuals. And then I looked at the reviews after it came out to see if I was wrong, and they were... underwhelming. I'll see it when it comes out on netflix or I can catch it on tv.

I enjoyed it and thought that it was perfectly pleasant to watch. I liked seeing something else happening in the Star Wars universe that was more than just a war in the stars, and the acting was way better than everyone acted like it was.

I think I get what OP means, though. There were so many rumors about this and that and everything being just TERRIBLE that I think a lot of people were put off.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-18 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
I liked the movie. Saw it twice. And while I originally lamented that it came out a mere 5 months after TLJ (why not do December like the last 3 years?), I think it had that "summer fun action movie" vibe so a summer release made sense in that way. Just maybe not quite so close to other huge movies that divide the audience? I think the timing had more of an impact than they're saying and I hope it makes them slow down a little (yeah right -- well, a gal can dream?)

On the plus side, I can put the bluray on my Christmas list :)

(Anonymous) 2018-06-18 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
I initially didn't watch it for the shallowest of reasons: I don't like the lead actor's face. He just looks wrong to me, in a vaguely uncanny valley sort of way. Not sure why, and I've never seen anyone else express this opinion, but there it is.

And then the reviews (both critical and friends') started pouring in and cemented my decision. I maybe would've powered through my distaste for a truly awesome film, but for a fun yet unexceptional one? No, thanks.

(Though I do still want to see Donald Glover as Lando, so maybe I'll watch it on Netflix eventually. But I'm definitely not paying to see it at the cinema.)

I enjoyed it, too, and I liked Alden as Han.
