Yeah, no. They're pretty obvious on their post, the stuff they reblog and their "don't follow if..."

Yeah it surprises me that so many people on f!s can’t seem to know toxic people from non-toxic people. If toxic shits are as obvious as so many people on here say they are and as OP illustrates in their secret, then how the fuck is it so hard to know who to block and who not to block?

Hell I block people on petty shit. Blocking isn’t hard. You’re free to block who you want for whatever reason. Why be so hesitant to use that damn button?

(Anonymous) 2018-06-19 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
No fucking shit. Blocking someone once you've seen their shit is easy and I'm pretty sure most people already do that.

However, a lot of the more dedicated anti-whatever blogs will create multiple accounts because they know people are blocking them. Depending on the fandom size it's never just one or a few people that you block and everything is better. There are hundreds and even if you block them there are more bandwagoners coming all the time.

How do you know who's targeting you through keyword searches before they've issued their "callout?" (Which may not even appear on your timeline, since it's a common practice on tumblr to use screenshots to get around blocks.) After the callout happens, you're playing whack-a-mole against a harassment mob of dozens and their sockpuppets.

It's why people have been dropping out of social media right and left lately. Personal block tools don't scale to handle multi-account mob brigading.

You still have to see their shit then look at their profile to determine their toxicity.
One down... hundreds more to go and new ones incoming all the time.

Never mind the fact that some people whose blogs I love don't just ignore the toxic people like they should, they have to reblog and talk about it all the time. So I still have to see it. Or maybe I should just lecture them on what they should and should not interact with.

So you, like, follow people blindly just because they posted one nice gif set? You don't see what else they post or their profile before following them?

And those people you follow don't tag that shit? Because if they tag consistently, you can blacklist those tags and not see them talking about that.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-19 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Why are you acting like people are only going to find your blog if you follow them first? It's hardly like there's any kind of friends-only mode on Tumblr automatically blocking anyone but the people you trust.

Unless you post/reblog "controversial" content frequently or are in a small fandom (and those fandoms rarely attract antis), chances are they won't find you, and if they do, your initial response or lack of it makes a difference.

Don't engage them, if they try to engage you block them, and keep anon asks off.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-19 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
That's all good advice, but it doesn't change anything if the mere existence of the teens who think 25+ people in fandom are all horrible pedophiles is what offends & scares someone to the point of never wanting to be involved in fandom spaces. Because they do harass people off the site, and even if it's easy to avoid it happening to you personally, it really is understandable to be bothered by that.

"Controversial" meaning, about half of the ships associated with the new movies.

Or just holding the opinion that people who do a "problematic" ship shouldn't be chased out of fandom to protect the precious feels of tumblr young adults.

Because they're an idiot?

(Anonymous) 2018-06-19 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
More like I'm someone who blocks and blacklists as much as I can to keep my tumblr experience as hate-free as I can.

And hey, 1000+ followers and many not-anti-approved posts later, and so far I've only got one negative ask! I blocked that person, and I have yet to hear again from them.

Guess that not playing their game helps to avoid the biggest issue with antis. But if you still want to engage them just so you can complain about them... have fun with that, if you enjoy that negativity?

(Anonymous) 2018-06-19 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
But you're generalizing from a single experience just because it works for you. Some people that do what you do avoid hate. Some people that do what you do don't. There's no way to know a priori what the proportions are without doing some investigation. Even polling your own personal contacts wouldn't work because it's a blatantly self-selected sample by your own admission.

Just because a strategy worked for one person doesn't mean it's a universally-successful strategy; you can't properly generalize individual experiences to a broader population purely by virtue of those experiences.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-19 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
And you're generalizing in the most negative way possible.

Shit happens, tumblr (like any popular site) is a mixed bag, and yes, there're awful people there who do harass others with any excuse, and worse.

But anyone's tumblr experience doesn't have to be pure hell. There are tools to avoid the worse or even to make it good, and using them instead of fearing all the time is better.
