I think the bit about body types is somewhat justified on a lot of TV shows, at least, because everyone on TV is always basically the same body type anyway.

But the fact that everyone on TV is the same body type also sucks, so, you're still right I guess.

I never liked any makeovers on TV, it always comes off like "you're too different, you should be more like everyone else!"

(Anonymous) 2018-06-20 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
IA, that's a great point

(Anonymous) 2018-06-20 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
The "best" example of this is one of the Bratz specials. The girl in question stood out from the rest because she had glasses, normalish clothes, and wore no makeup. She was really cute! But she wasn't "unique", so a makeover it is!

She came out looking exactly the same at the other girls 9_9

I've always been around the same size as most of my friends/sister growing up and I also have plenty of weird shit in my closet I wouldn't normally wear, so I guess I'm more stereotypical than I thought.

I don't have a sister and all of my friends were varying body-types so none of us could share clothes and the one girl who was my size was like a foot taller than me as well so it's not like that even worked out, lol.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-20 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
The only person I have ever been able to share clothes with is my mom, but it is possible to find stuff I don't remember about in my closet because I never throw anything out even if I haven't worn it in years.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-20 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
The trope is annoying given the way it plays into the Ugly Duckling stereotype.

But...it’s not uncommon to share standard clothing sizes? That’s why they’re standard — a piece may not flatter a body, or a skin tone, but they are generally wearable. I shared with my mom and sis both; my BFFs and I could borrow clothing from each other.

And as for forgetting what’s in one’s closet...happens to me all the time? Sad, but there you go.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-20 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I forget a lot of shit in my closet too. I’d only understand this response if someone had a small stack. Otherwise yay for poor memory.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-20 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
I always hated the makeover trope because it's like "Wow, you were actually hot the whole time?!? Now we'll finally treat you like a human being worthy of respect, unlike when you had messy hair and glasses but we're basically the same person!"

god, this.

fuck the Great Beauty Standards tbh. don't let that crap (and it is crap) bother you more than it already bothers society

I dislike the 'take off your glasses' type makeover.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-20 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
People who wear glasses instead of contacts sometimes have a reason for that.

I don't think I've really ever forgotten what's in my closet, but there are a few things I don't wear very often and I think someone else looking at your clothes could put some things together in a way you'd never thought to wear them. And, in middle school and high school, my friends and I sometimes wore each other's clothes - I specifically remember them dressing me up for a dance. I was in 8th grade and a guy I clocked as an adult, maybe 19-21, hit on me (he was shocked to learn my age), so I don't know that I'd define that as success.

I will say this about makeovers, it's amazing what clothes that fit well and a flattering hairstyle can do for some people.

there's nothing wrong with glasses. I think that dumb trope was invented by contact lens companies.

Tried contact lenses and they're fine, but my face is the kind of face that benefits from wearing glasses so yes.

I'm reminded of a scene from Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist where the gay guys in Nick's band give Norah one of THEIR bras (it was implied they cross dress) to help with her outfit because she was wearing a sports bra.

I'm not sure how plausible it is in hindsight that dudes would cross dress in exactly Kat Denning's strap and cup size...

what's wrong with sports bras? I wear them a lot. They're comfortable.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-20 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen the movie, but comfy as sports bras are, the shoulder straps don't always sit well with the neckline of a fancy dress or top.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-20 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
According to the movie "uni-boobs" are a no-no. At least for a night out in New York City.

I feel this. I also feel that these tropes keep company with another one I find increasingly irritating -- "you just need to get laid!"/"you just need to get a boyfriend!"/"you just need to flirt with that hot guy who's checking you out at this club we forced you to come to!"

I don't even like the stereotype that every girl has some clothes lying around that she never wears.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-20 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm in that stereotype. Half of the items are for specific types of events and half are of the "omg what was I thinking?" variety.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-20 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's a stereotype but something that's quite common?
Like, if your weight varies (mine does) there are clothes you keep but don't wear for a long time, impulse buying is a thing you can regret later, people might gift you something you aren't that fond of...

(Anonymous) 2018-06-20 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I just assume everyone has clothes lying around that they don't wear.
