Re: Justice Kennedy is retiring

Maybe more young people will vote this November. Or maybe they won't and they will fuck themselves over again. :)

Re: Justice Kennedy is retiring

(Anonymous) 2018-06-27 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe Democrats will run decent campaigns instead of blaming their support base for their own failures.

Re: Justice Kennedy is retiring

(Anonymous) 2018-06-27 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Or maybe the new progressive socialist party will take over Congress!

Re: Justice Kennedy is retiring

(Anonymous) 2018-06-27 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
What new progressive socialist party are you talking about?

Re: Justice Kennedy is retiring

(Anonymous) 2018-06-27 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
The one that's ousting incumbent democrats in primaries.

Re: Justice Kennedy is retiring

(Anonymous) 2018-06-28 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
But... the primaries they're running for are Democratic primaries

because they're democrats

Re: Justice Kennedy is retiring

(Anonymous) 2018-06-28 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
They may be running in Democratic primaries, but they're not Democrats any more than Sanders is a Democrat or Trump is a Republican.

Re: Justice Kennedy is retiring

(Anonymous) 2018-06-28 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Uhhhhh,,, OK, I'm not even going to get into the Democratic stuff at this point - in what possible sense is Trump not a Republican? The Republican Party literally nominated him for President after he won a shitload of primaries. The vast majority of elected Republican officials support him, as do most self-identified Republicans (according to polls). What more would it take for him to be a Republican, in your eyes?

Re: Justice Kennedy is retiring

(Anonymous) 2018-06-28 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Are you kidding? Republicans hate him! They lost their shit when he started winning primaries. Elected Republicans support him now because they want to get re-elected. And I believe Trump spent much of his career donating to the Democratic party, didn't he? Not that he's a Democrat, either. But he's not a Republican. At least not in Republicans' eyes.

?????????

http://www.foxnews.com/official-polls/index.html

Trump's approval rating with Republican voters is like 90%.

Re: Justice Kennedy is retiring

(Anonymous) 2018-06-28 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
They lost their shit when he started winning primaries.

Who, exactly, voted for him in those primaries?

Elected Republicans support him now because they want to get re-elected

But the reason that it would prevent their re-election if they didn't support him is because... they would lose in primaries to Republicans who did support Trump

At least not in Republicans' eyes.

I mean, there are definitely Republicans for whom this is true! But it's a very small minority by basically every objective measure. You're mistaking a specific clique of Reagan-worshipping center-right Republican grandees for the party as a whole - which, in fairness, is also a mistake that those grandees make, but that doesn't mean that it's true.

Re: Justice Kennedy is retiring

(Anonymous) 2018-06-28 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
And his donations to the Democratic party?

Re: Justice Kennedy is retiring

(Anonymous) 2018-06-28 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
He might have been a Democrat at one point in his life, I don't know.

I don't think that precludes him from being a Republican now. And against those past donations, there's the evidence that he is a Republican - the fact that he was nominated for President by the Republican Party, that the institutional Republican Party continues to support him, and that the Republican Party base overwhelmingly supports him. Those are pretty clear signs, IMO.

This No True Republican narrative for Trump is stupid and dangerous. The GOP pretends to be shocked and appalled by his crass behavior, like they're above it all, but they've fallen in line all his moves.

Re: Justice Kennedy is retiring

(Anonymous) 2018-06-27 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously, we need to do whatever we can to motivate every single Democrat/liberal and independent (as well as any moderate Republicans that still exist and are horrified at what their party's become under Trump) to get out and vote like mad this November.

Honestly, though, I don't think people going out and voting in and of itself is going to be the big issue. I think (I certainly hope, at least) there's enough people on the left pissed off at what's happening to where they're going to go vote. My big concern is whether or not our election results will be fucked with again.

Re: Justice Kennedy is retiring

(Anonymous) 2018-06-28 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I think the left has lost independents and moderates for good, and they're losing liberals, too.

Re: Justice Kennedy is retiring

(Anonymous) 2018-06-28 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Do you have any quantitative evidence for that, or is it just SJWS REGRESSIVE LEFT-type shouting?

Re: Justice Kennedy is retiring

(Anonymous) 2018-06-28 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't realize I was shouting.

Re: Justice Kennedy is retiring

(Anonymous) 2018-06-28 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I meant, is shouting going to be your evidence.

Re: Justice Kennedy is retiring

(Anonymous) 2018-06-28 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
No, clearly I don't have evidence. I don't even know how you would obtain evidence. Polling apparently doesn't work. Polls told us Trump had no chance of winning.

Re: Justice Kennedy is retiring

(Anonymous) 2018-06-28 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Polls actually told us that Trump had a 35% chance of winning. 1 in 3.

The problem wasn't the polls, so much as it was people massively misinterpreting the polls, and everyone believing those people just because they wanted it to be true. Like, Nate Silver spent a good solid week or two on Twitter before the election screaming about how the polls were tightening and Trump had a chance. It's not the polls' fault that people decided to ignore him.

Polls actually told us that Trump had a 35% chance of winning. 1 in 3.

I'm not good at math, but that seems like an enormous margin of error that has nothing to do with interpretation.

Re: Justice Kennedy is retiring

(Anonymous) 2018-06-28 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
It's not at all enormous! I mean, think about it - if you roll a six-sided dice, there's a 1/3 chance that it'll come up with a 1 or a 2. Flipping a coin and having it come up heads twice in a row is actually less likely than 35%. And you wouldn't actually be shocked if either of those things happened, because they're well within the normal course of events.

He was a definite underdog, especially in the context of a presidential race, but 35% chances do happen, all the time. Unlikelier things happen all the time.

I mean, I'm looking at this data...

https://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/latest_polls/president/

...and it just seems like there were some issues with the polling, considering the actual outcome.

DA

I think the opposite, but I also think reality doesn't care much what one thinks, either you or me, based on our limited personal experiences.
