(Anonymous) 2018-07-01 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)Russell came across as a humorless robot who didn't want to be there (shades of Donald Sutherland in the original Buffy movie). Now, I realize that it's not fair to compare a movie portrayal to a series, but as I recall from the start RDA played O'Neil with a lot more humor.
And while I concede that Jaye looked nifty in most of the costumes, his delivery and body language just... did not work for me. After so many millennia terrorizing the Abydonians, you'd think he'd come across as a wee more arrogant. And yes, I guess he did suffer by comparison with Peter Williams, who served up such regal contemptuousness as Apophis.
(Late 90s Jaye would have made a splendid Dionysis, though, right?)

That was the second and only acting job Davidson had - he was in 'The Crying Game' before that, and intensely loathed the 'fame' that came with movies, so he quit after that and did modelling instead.

The film has its place for me but the first S-G1 thing I saw was Children of the Gods when it premiered in the UK so I overall prefer the series. It being TV did mean they got to explore things a bit better so yes Apophis is just better because they could develop him more and do things like focus on the tragedy of the host's existence. You don't really get a sense of Ra's host (and how awful it is) in the film because there isn't the time.
My favourite System Lord is probably Ba'al though - purely because he makes fun of the rest of his kind for being SO overdramatic while at the same time still somehow embracing the theatrical side to the max.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-01 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)When I finally got to see the tv series (which was a while after the fact, since it was on premium cable at the time) I didn't like it as much. The way everything looked like British Columbia was too different and made it feel smaller in scope. The CGI morphing helmets of the movie were so awesome, and the practical-effect helmets of early years of the show were so clunky and silly in comparison. I was also really turned off by the "Just because I keep my reproductive parts on the inside..." speech (thank goodness they made fun of that later). I didn't get into the show until quite late in it's run, by which time it had moved a long way from the movie and evolved into its own thing, so it was easier to enjoy it as a separate work (and it had moved to basic cable). I have no opinion on the bad guy, since I think he was gone by then.
He was playing it to the max.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-02 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)Also it has great sets and location filming, which I really miss in films.
(I loved SG1 and SGA too although for completely different reasons.)
