Pretty good except something is *biting me*. The cats don't have fleas, nobody else in the house is getting bit. And of course, my stupid system is in overdrive so i have huge, horribly itchy welts.

After barely budging from my couch all day yesterday because it was so fucking hot, I went to the plant nursery today and bought some herbs and native stuff. It’s not much cooler but it’s overcast and there’s a breeze, which helps.

I'm off work today. Got up and went to Starbucks and the taqueria, came back home and am now watching NFL preseason football!

mostly been sitting around watching TV. I'm pissed because some asshole used his yelp review to insult me (I am also a reviewer) and yelp won't do anything about it.

Not great. Stress has me so nauseous, I might take a day off of work.

It has good parts and bad parts.

The good: I got a kitty yesterday. He had major issues at the shelter and had been there a month and was running out of time. I brought him home and he is definitely skittish, but he is the sweetest thing and such a smuggler. He is currently snuggled against my side.

The bad (warning medical discussion and a bit of TMI): I have had kidney stones for while that just won't pass. I finally went to the doctor because I was pretty sure there was blood in my urine and I was freaked out. Turns out there was/is blood (and other stuff) in my pee, but I couldn't be scheduled for a renal ultrasound until August 30th. And today has been more painful than it has been and I'm freaked out that I'm going to have another hugely painful event (I get those a few times a year and wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy). And I don't want to end up going to the er, but idk if I'll be able to last until the 30th. (And it seems to me if I have blood and other stuff in my urine, it might be a sign I should possibly be seen before then. But, I guess not?)

Sigh. So... kitty snuggles.

Pretty good! I decorated my room today and finally pur up all those postcards I've been hoarding. They look so pretty. I also dusted my figures and bookshelves. I just need to vacuum and throw out the trash and I'll be done.

Pretty good! I just gave a presentation in class about witchcraft laws which I think went alright, and now I'm just chilling writing some fan fiction before work.

Are book summaries always just...*bad*?

I went to Amazon to read the summary of the book in the secret (and some reviews, out of curiosity), and that summary is so...cliched. It's like every *other* 'human and fae/magical world in peril' book summary ever.

I swear, book summaries are just *dreadful*, and it kinda puts me off wanting to read much of anything.

Yup. In my experience, book summaries are terrible, a least for fiction. Sometimes nonfiction summaries are okay.

Yeah, more often than not, they're just awful and don't really give you an idea of what to expect at all. I don't think authors or publishers put much time and effort into them.

Well to be fair, from what little I remember, “like every *other* ‘human and fae/magical world in peril book’ is a pretty accurate summary of this one. I just finished Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik and liked it a lot better. Also Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge and The Thinking Woman’s Guide to Real Magic by Emily Barker, and—uh, wow, I read a lot of these.

I haven't found any on Amazon, but a long time ago (maybe 15-20 years ago), I found a book at a bookstore with a summary that read something like this: "She ate the candy. She smiled. It tasted good."

It was a Middle Grade (so late elementary/primary school) level book, but... still. And no, "candy" wasn't a metaphor for drugs.

They're always pretty bad and, in some cases, misleading. I've read books where the summaries made it seem like the books were gonna be light beach reads, when in reality they're super dark and everybody dies.

A lot of the time! I always get the free Kindle books, which are mostly unknown authors, and usually get like 10 at a time, picking them by the summary. Usually by the time I get around to reading them, I can't remember what they're supposed to be about and I think "well, I know the summary sounded good, I'll give it a shot" and the book ends up being completely off the wall and I go back and read the summary and it's nothing at all like the actual book. I've found a few really good books through the free ones, but most of them are...not great.

I get that they can help save kids but I was just falling asleep (not easy because I don’t have AC and it’s ~84 degrees in here) when my phone went off and my heart rate quadrupled. I grabbed my phone to stop the noise, and didn’t even get a look at the alert, because I was too busy trying not to barf, because my hindbrain decided I was under attack.

I’ve only had a couple anxiety attacks in my life but damn if this didn’t fasttrack one. And now I’m back to insomnia. Fuck. I hope the kid’s okay, but unless the kidnapper runs their white van or whatever through my bedroom wall, I’m not gonna be any use to keep an eye out for at least eight hours.
