I'm done with people saying people on social media are "too happy." First, I don't know who they follow because all I see are posts about Trump and depression and needing to lose weight and looking for jobs. When I see happy posts it's like a fish out of water. Second, why is it anyone's business what someone else posts? And why revel in the fact that they're probably faking it and miserable inside? If anything, that should be a key that we all handle shit differently, not that some of us are more real and others of us "fake it."

It varies a lot based on not just who you follow, but what social media you're on - Twitter is going to be a lot different than Instagram, that kind of thing.

& there's nothing wrong with being happy and posting about it. But it does bug me, and I think it's harmful, when there's a cultural pressure to present things that way *all the time* - to present your life as though you're constantly doing cool, expensive shit with an endless lineup of cool, hot people. It bugs me and I find it very alienating.

No one gets a completely perfect life with everything they want all the time forever, but some people definitely have it better than others. I think trying to convince yourself that the "perfect" people are secretly all miserable fakers is not helpful. The best we can do is acknowledge our jealousy and disappointment and try to come to terms with the fact that we won't get everything in life.

I'm a very private person, despite my chattiness, and the only things I share online are fandom because that's the only thing I want to engage about with friends and acquaintances. If I feel like talking about anything else, only my close IRL friends are going to hear it. They just can't stand others aren't as openly miserable as them, instead just compartmentalizing like a healthy adult.

When I was younger, I used to air all my troubles online, and boy did that stress me out so much more in the long run. Because everyone's got an opinion, and I finally decided parts of my life are no one's damn business but my own.
