Which old sites do you miss?

The classic DBZ site. My sister and I used to spend soooo much time on it.

Television Without Pity. :( I used to hang out in their forums as school.

Fox used to have show forums that I spent A LOT of time on during my lunch breaks at school.

Yes! First the site got weird, then it went away. There was an attempt at it being revamped, wasn't there? I don't know whatever happened with that.

I think they archived a bunch of it. But no new stuff. :(

The AV Club (the real one)

same

Same. I was there earlier this week, and everything is so click-bait-y. I couldn't find any legitimate music reviews (they're probably there, but buried, and I didn't want to dig).

There were too many to be specific, but I miss the concept of fan websites. I don't know why that stopped being a thing. That was so much easier than everything being so scattered, or being at the mercy of sites like LJ (and now tumblr) that don't really care about fandom.

(Some examples: Sugar Quill, FictionAlley, A Heroes site I forget the name of...)

Because there's much more ability to find content, share content, and socialize on sites like Tumblr

Arguably, too much ability to do those things

AYRT: It's funny because I find the exact opposite to be true. First, a lot of fansites had specific themes, so you knew what kinds of fics you were more likely to find. Or there would be sections FOR those kinds of fics. Where now I find it's harder to do. Even LJ wasn't the best for that, because LJ fandom was often geared towards certain kinds of fandom.

On the other hand, I agree about socializing. I'm not a tumblr person, but I remember I felt I could be more "me" on LJ. I was constantly holding back from saying too much on forums, since I didn't want to take over the threads. LJ I was suddenly able to say everything on my mind, and then find out what other people had on their mind. And going "OT" wasn't an issue. So that's a plus. However, I still felt when there were sites, it meant I got the best of both worlds.

Yeah, I totally get what you mean here, the amount of content out there is kind of like a firehose and it can be hard to dive down and get the stuff that really matches what you're looking for

And same with socializing at times tbh, there's too many people and it's too easy to see and spread completely wild-ass shit

It's a double-edged sword

Re: Based on #8

Huh. I find it way harder to find and talk about content on sites like Tumblr, compared to sites dedicated to a particular fandom. People rarely tag consistently and it's hard to have a discussion through reblogs.
And God help me if I want to discuss a part of the media critically. Apparently people think tags should never have negative opinions in them, or if there are tags set aside for critical posts instead of mindless fangirling, I have no way to find them.

Yeah, this is kind of what I was getting at with the idea of being too able to share things - it becomes this endless morass where you end up seeing *everything* and it's impossible to be selective.

So the usual conventions I’ve seen with tags are “fandom,” “fandom critical” and “anti fandom,” “character,” “character critical” and “anti character” and so on for pairings and stuff. So squeeing goes in character tags, criticism in criticism tags, and “fuck this, that, and the other thing” goes in anti tags. I’ve also occasionally seen “meta” tags used apoended to characters and fandoms. It’s not perfect, but eh.

I miss those too. The anime forum I used to frequent when I went to high school went down a few years ago and it felt like an end of an era for me.

That one pairing generator hosted on some pirate RPG site. It had lots of characters.

The fan pages and rings on geocities.

I do too for my old fandoms. I don't miss the random autoplay midis and virusriddled popups.

dotmusic, popex, twop, most of geocities, the tower of pin, altavista, astalavista.box.sk, several other sites that still technically exist but are utter dumpster fires compared to what they used to be

The fan-run Phantom of the Opera site and especially its forum.
