I mean uhhhhhh

For all the massive problems with the discourse and also the very concept of "wholeness", I still think it's better on the whole to be aware of + care about systemic injustice and inequality, than not to

(Anonymous) 2018-10-05 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, but are we talking about those concepts to actually fight systematic inequality or using those concepts superficially to win internet slapfights over who Draco Malfoy would bone?

(Anonymous) 2018-10-05 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
The latter is definitely stupid as hell. it's bit of a dilemma, though, I think, because the unfortunate reality is that we don't live in a world made up of people who are reasonable. So I think its better that people care about and talk about injustice - even if that means that some of them are chuckle heads who only care about stupid internet bullshit.

I mean, if your point is just that those people are idiots, yes, I agree, but not big enough idiots to reject the enterprise entirely.

Different anon: it's the hypercompetitive woker-than-thou stuff that annoys me. I often feel like scoring points off someone else is more important to those types than the actual issues. And yeah, I feel like a lot of the people who go on and on about Rowling are in that category.

Totally fair! It's very annoying and stupid!

I think it's great when people are aware of injustice and care about injustice.

When they get performative and preachy about it, I'm out.

Like, how hard is it just to set an example through your own words and actions? Why do people always have to be trying to control other people's words and actions?

"Wokeness" is just a new religion, and I have as little respect for its vocal proponents as I do for those who push religion on others.

That's pretty much how I feel about it.

On one hand I agree that awareness, tolerance, and diversity is very important. However, people get so fucking catty and aggressive about it to the point they don't actually want positive change, they just want the moral high ground. They WANT people to remain ignorant so they can have some receipts to write callout posts on tumblr.

They only care about stuff on a surface level not out of an actual drive to educate people and make the world a more tolerant place.

Like, for fucks sake, even if some problematic person sees the error or their ways and tries to apologize they still get called scum. They don't want to believe people can change.

I mean

you can be an asshole and also genuinely want positive social change and an end to injustice at the same time

people are fuckin complicated

Wanting and doing are to separate things. I want to be cool, stylish, and well liked, but take a wild guess on what I'm doing this Friday night.
