What food trends do you hate? Which do you love?

I've been looking for Halloween recipes.

Thinks I dislike: half-assed things that are just pre-made cookies with melted chocolate all over them to be ghosts or things like that.

Thinks I like: some really creative stuff. Like gazpacho soup put into these fake syringe servers. Mummy hotdogs are easy to do but still look a little creative. Using powdered donut holes as spider eggs. Meatballs as zombie eyes. Things that are still pretty easy, but just look more interesting than cookie ghosts.

it's pretty easy to find that sort of stuff, I just google Halloween treats and pick and choose.

I hate kale and cranberries and therefore don't appreciate them showing up frequently.

Agreed on kale! I swear that shit became trendy overnight and it's so bitter and gross, and I'm perfectly happy to eat literally any other vegetable.

yeah, I like most other vegetables but not that bitter crap. :P

It's actually good roasted though. It's the only way I will eat it. Especially if it ends up crispy.

I tried kale in a pub meal a while back because it's been showing up on every menu down here recently, and why. It was so gross. And even the worst UTI's I've had have never been enough to make me stomach cranberry juice.

Bacon. Especially because a lot of places FRY it. Which is such a gross way to make bacon.

Whaaaaaaaaat.

Wait, do you mean, like, deep-frying as opposed to pan-frying?

Re: Based on 4

(Anonymous) 2018-10-08 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen people put it on a tray in the oven instead of pan frying, but I've never tried it myself.

I like to cook it in the oven, but only when it's cold enough out to turn the oven on. My parents always used to cook it in the microwave because they had a special bacon microwave pan and it came out good. You can microwave it between paper towels on a normal plate, but I do't like the results very much. You can also cook it in a pan but start out with a little water in the pan to cook it more evenly, but I guess that would still be considered pan-frying.

Bake it. All of the bacon gets crispy and you don't have gross fatty pieces.

Nuts in everything.

I do like nuts, but I have to eat them on their own. I can't deal with the texture of them when they're IN things, like cookies, or brownies.

Re: Based on 4

Sea salt in sweet things. America's Test Kitchen always tells me "salt is a flavor enhancer!" but I think the sea salt sweets trend has resulted in a lot of people overdoing it and thinking this salty monstrosity they have created is some kind of gourmet masterpiece because SEA SALT. A bar of chocolate with sea salt? Tastes like salty chocolate. Sea salt brownie? This is just a salty brownie. Making things "same, but MORE SALTY" is not an automatic improvement, guys. A little kick of salt might be interesting, but people just lay it on way too thick.

Yeah, it should be more of an accent in sweet things.

I don't like pumpkin.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-09 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
So all the fall food with pumpkin in it is kind of irritating. Even the pumpkin spice things that just have the spices (which I like all of the ones usually used making in pumpkin pie) and not the pumpkin aren't great because I immediately associate it with pumpkin and thus tend to have a mental block about it.

Right there with you. I hate pumpkin. Pecan pie should be the pie of the season.

Re: I don't like pumpkin.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-09 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Nah. Way too sweet, and shitty for people who have nut allergies.

I love pumpkin flavor but it really is overdone. I don't need it in my yogurt or my favorite snack bar. Lattes and ales are okay though.

Hate:

kale, kale everywhere
Pumpkin spice flavored everything
Avocado in everything (and I love avocado)
Pureeing something that isn't avocado and still having the temerity to call it guacamole

I for one hate avocado. I get that it is popular. I just wish more restaurants were clear about what is in their food. Don't surprise me with ingredients. I might be allergic. Like, I hate, hate, hate hard boiled eggs. They actually trigger panic attacks in me (long story). So I always avoid them. Except, the other day a deli put them in the tuna sandwich I ordered even though their menu said nothing about eggs being included.

that's not OK, some people are allergic to eggs.

Re: Based on 4

(Anonymous) 2018-10-09 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Igh. That's why I don't order tuna or chicken salad in delis. Not only is it a rip off, but other people are always putting weird shit in it. Fuck off with mixing grapes into my chicken salad, dammit.
