[Angel, Supernatural]

Maybe it's because I also don't know what you're referencing, but the wording of this is a bit confusing?

I don't know about the Angel scene, but in SPN Dean sells his soul to save his brother. So instead of his soul going to heaven, it is dragged to hell.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-20 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
In Angel, her soul is entirely consumed by a god, so it doesn't go on to the afterlife.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-17 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand your objection to Angel going to Hell.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-17 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe she is referring to the girl. Didn't her soul get like....taken over by an ancient god?

(Anonymous) 2018-10-17 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT - Yes. But actually, apparently if Angel had continued, there was going to be a reveal that Fred wasn't really gone, and she was going to start coming out in Illyria.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-18 09:47 am (UTC)(link)
They already did this in the comics, which is considered a canon continuation.

If I'm rememberig correctly, Fred didn't go to hell, she was consumed by Illyria (and it seemed to me that there was some evidence that Illyria has absorbed Fred's memories and such as well).

Now, if you say that Fred didn't deserve such a fate, then I can agree with you there for sure.

I'm fine with Dean going to hell. He made his choice when he made the deal.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-17 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. Well, not exactly fine because it was pretty awful, but he knew exactly what he was getting into when he made the choice to save Sam. So in his case, his soul went exactly where it was meant to go. I think a better example would've been Bobby getting dragged to hell 'cause of a rogue Reaper when his soul was meant to go to heaven.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-17 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah that was the deal. He's a good schmoe, because Hell is a long time and the torment is inconceivable. Admittedly, not as long as eternity, considering how brokedown SPN Hell turned out to be.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-17 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I somehow completely forgot Aker played Fred. Her role as Root was so completely different. What a terrific actress.

Fred didn't go to hell tho? Her body got taken over but her soul was okay?

(Anonymous) 2018-10-17 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. Her soul was utterly destroyed. She just ceased to exist.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-17 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, as an atheist, all I can say is...that's death for ya. Better than the concept of hell, anyway.

As far as I remember, her soul was destroyed so that Ilyria could take its place in Fred's body.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-18 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't Joss reveal that if Angel had gotten another season, it would have been revealed that Fred still existed inside Ilyria?

OP

(Anonymous) 2018-10-17 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
To clear up confusion: the girl (Fred) in the first scene has her soul destroyed by an ancient god, and in the second, Dean goes to hell after making a deal with a demon.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2018-10-18 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
But, I mean... From a classical Christian perspective, if you make a deal with the devil, doesn't that intrinsically mean that you deserve to go to hell

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2018-10-18 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, he only made the deal to save his brother's life. Also he was basically manipulated into it anyways because heaven and hell both needed him to go to hell for reasons.

The top one is still miles worse for me because Fred's soul was utterly consumed in order to revive Illyria into her body, and I was(and still am) goddamn conflicted because I adored Fred, but Illyria was so fucking cool and interesting in her(it's?) own right and I just... Gah.

I hated and liked it at the same time.

Dean going to hell was sad, but also cool, but it was part of a deal he made and he got brought back anyway so it doesn't have the same impact for me.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-18 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
I liked Fred, but I hated the interminable love triangle they shoved her into, so I was really glad that was over!

And yeah, Dean made a choice. Fred got fucked over.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-18 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Good Lord, I hated the Illyria plot. There were certain parts of that last season that were beyond brilliant and certain parts I pretend never happened.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-18 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Whaaa? Is it the trope you don't like? Or do you really think you have a soul that survives death in some way and that some deity rules over where it goes?

(Anonymous) 2018-10-18 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
These are...fictional universes? And in both of them, heaven and hell and the existence of souls is a canon fact. What are you getting at?
