(Anonymous) 2018-10-26 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
except i don't hold mass media to standards either lol whatever i'm going to hell

(Anonymous) 2018-10-26 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Me either. It's entertainment, not education.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-26 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. It's all about beating on people who can feel it, I guess. Too bad they're already feeling it.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-26 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
You really can't imagine any reason why people might actually be sincere in their objections, even if you disagree with those objections?

(Anonymous) 2018-10-26 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

Because they cope with their own pain by attempting to control others?

(Anonymous) 2018-10-26 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe they have a sincere moral objection to it

(Anonymous) 2018-10-26 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
You can morally object to something without trying to control others.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-26 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know what we mean by "control" but isn't it implicit, if I morally object to something, that I mean that I believe it is wrong for people to do in general?

Whoa, hold up there. A 'moral' objection? They can take that and shove it up their area.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-26 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I hate it when people do the "Well it's okay as long as you blah blah blah" because it just sounds so damn sanctimonious like they're GIVING YOU PERMISSION to ship who you ship or to have a specific kink. How magnanimous of them!

(Anonymous) 2018-10-26 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
people are free to write whatever they want and people are also free to dislike whatever they want. fair's fair.

nayrt

If someone is on their own blog talking about how they hate fic with rape and they wish people wouldn't write it, then I'm not going their blog to tell them they're not allowed to criticize anything. But if they're telling people anyone who writes rape fic is a bad person, encouraging people to leave pointless flames on fic, or sending abusive messages to people, that's not OK. And it definitely does happen.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-26 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I like you.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-27 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Enjoy what you want within whatever spaces are designated for you to do so. Don't get all self-righteous when people side-eye you for your puppy-fucking kink or tell you to keep it out of the family-friendly PAW Patrol forum or their personal pet blog. It's really not that complicated.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-27 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, this.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-27 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
Wow lots of assuming there

"You are talking about not being lectured about the morality of fiction , so you must be a weirdo with fucked up kinks who wants to talk about it in inappropriate spaces"

Except there are whole social media communities (tumblr/twitter) that are poisoned by people who go into spaces or fics that they don't approve of on communities people make for those kind of fics/ships with warnings and everything just to tell those people they're wrong and should die.

People are complaining about this because there are people going into spaces for something they don't like , into adult only spaces when they're minors in some cases to lecture people about how wrong they are.

So fuck off with your stupid ass fake analogy and your strawman.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-27 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

This is a really frustrating argument. Because "don't come in to marked-off spaces to tell people what they're doing wrong" is a sentiment that I agree with, and it's also a different sentiment from "making moral arguments about fiction is wrong in general". And it's really frustrating trying to figure out which argument is being made at any given point.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-27 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
DA - sounds to me like you're also making some assumptions and strawman arguments, and much more needlessly aggressively than the previous commenter.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-27 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
A million times this. There are some tropes that I really don't like, but you know what? I just don't read fic with those tropes. It's amazing how easy it is.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-27 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
It's infinitely easier than when I started reading fanfic.

...Yeah.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-27 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. If people don't like something, they can

A) Not read it. Block, filter, ignore
B) Write their own version the way they prefer it, and it'll find its audience because there's going to be people out there who agree with them but were waiting for someone else to say it.

But you'll never be able to stop people from writing the thing you don't like.

And while occasionally, people raise a legitimate point ("that character is a canonical rapist and everyone's ignoring that"), there's also a tendency to overreact and take things too far (insisting a ship involving a 19 year old and someone older is "pedophilia" or flying into frothing rages that people ship an obviously unhealthy relationship which is not and never has been actually canon in the first place)

Overthinking things then reacting as if they have real world consequences is like the #1 cause of stupid fandom fights.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-27 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
A good fucking secret.

I'm getting so tired of the fucking purity parade. If you don't like it, don't read it, block it, whatever you have to do to not see it. But people can write/create whatever the fuck they want. Whether it's fandom or mass media.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-27 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally agree.
