It took about four hours just to go to the not-destroyed part of the city to print some documents to fax to FEMA for something regarding hurricane repairs.

Today was my last day off work for awhile. I went for a 35-minute run, got Starbucks, and did laundry. I had planned to watch a movie but haven't yet, maybe later this evening. I'm starting a new exercise program tomorrow and will be getting up at 5 AM to go running (35 minutes again, as an hour run before work is seriously making me nope). We'll see how it goes.

Ate too much at the work's October birthday celebration. Did a lot of data entry. Got a flu shot because my sister is having a baby soon.

Had a typical Tuesday at work. Fed all the animals at the pet store and saw the giant, cuddly Rottweiler that comes in every week, plus some other great dogs. One of the bearded dragons kept begging for food even longer than usual, long after the other lizards had given up on getting more. They're so cute.

not much. went to the grocery store to get milk, watched a movie on TV, tried very unsuccessfully to thread a needle in order to fix a sweater with a ripped seam.

Narrowly avoided sending a snide message to an artist I commissioned well over a year ago saying "So, any update on that commission I paid you good money for that you already spent? No? Didn't think so." after I saw her listing some ads for her prints shop.

Stuff. Heh. Filing, talking on the phone to people who tried to be snarky and failed. Denied a number of burn permits because it's dry and the wind is gusting to 20 miles and hour so just *fuck off* with your intense desire to incinerate fucking leaves, okay?

Also wrote more stuff for my weekly job reporting, and about died from smelling the pot roast the firefighters were slow-cooking all day (while i ate my wee canned tuna-salad-and-crackers and carrot sticks).

I bought a pumpkin to carve - the last one in the supermarket!!!
It was only even there because someone had done that annoying thing where they take an object from where it's stocked and then leave it on a random shelf somewhere else. I've never carved a pumpkin before and I'm really exited!

I had a swallow study and found out I have a hiatal hernia. I was worried it was something much worse so overall this is good news.

Doctor in the morning, working out my surgery. Then cooking until 3, then dressing quickly in my costume and racing over to the location of the party. Honestly, I feel so crappy I didn't actually get to enjoy things, but it seems like others had fun.

My mom helped me bleach and dye my hair! It is now fuchsia and fabulous and I feel much better about myself. I've kept it my natural color for the past five months because of the disability hearing I had in May, when the judge decided she wanted more information from pre-2007 and decided to reschedule. My lawyers were like "OMG the next hearing could be set for ANY DAY NOW, give us everything you have ASAP," so I decided to leave it my natural color just in case, as I don't think showing up to a hearing with neon hair would win me any points with the judge, but on Saturday I finally got the notice saying when the hearing is scheduled for, and it's not until February 6th. Real "hurry up and wait" situation there. At any rate, I figured I could get at least a couple months of having my hair the way I like it before going back to a natural shade just long enough to get through the hearing. So now my hair is fuschia and I am as happy as I'm capable of being and feeling better about myself.

Stupid rant incoming

(Anonymous) 2018-10-31 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Goddammit. I don’t have a life, so my idea of a fun Halloween is carving lots of pumpkins, dressing up in an ott costume, and handing out a shitton of candy.

I’ve got 14 pumpkins and easily spent $100+ on candy and was gonna wear a costume I last wore to SDCC. I was gonna change my porch light and clean the living room before work today, come home and hollow out pumpkins, curl my hair for my costume, fall over and sleep for a couple hours, and wake up tomorrow, carve jack o’lanterns all day until I dress up, and freak parents out and make kids’ days with a huge actual metal cauldron full to the brim with candy.

Instead the city decided the day before Halloween would be an awesome time to jackhammer every streetcorner sidewalk in a six block radius to install new curb cuts, which they last did less than a decade ago. And I just saw a new curb cut a block away and it’s identical to the old ones they’re replacing, down to the yellow bumpy stuff they added a decade ago for the blind and guide dogs. If they really want to make the neighborhood a no-go area, they may as well knock out the streetlights while they’re at it. Also, everyone that’s wheelchair bound is gonna be SOL for a bit unless they want to wheel into the street out a driveway somewhere.

The kids at the charter school across the way tend to live in places without many sidewalks or streetlights, so their parents bring them here to trick or treat. And now they’re gonna have to take them to an area the kids don’t know as well as the streets right by their school.

Instead of ripping up the same streets and sidewalks every other year, why doesn’t the city try installing streetlights and sidewalks in poorer areas so kids’ parents can let them trick or treat in their own neighborhoods? I’d miss the sheer volume of trick or treaters, but it would actually be useful, rather than yet another pointless demonstration of “your tax dollars at work.”

People who aren’t shrieking harpies who demand every cent of the tax money pried from their greedy fingers be spent within 100 feet of their houses won’t begrudge kids not getting run over on the way to school, I promise.

This is the definition of first-world problems but still: *sulks.*
