[The Captive Prince series by C.S. Pacat]

I kind of feel like you don't need to look that hard for an explanation as to why fandom people would gush over a thinly-veiled rape-to-love story, just in general

(Anonymous) 2018-11-04 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't have an answer for you op. But i'd never heard of these until today and you had me at trashy rape-to-love story.

Idek why. Just appeals.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-04 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
SA but only appeals when it's slash or equivalent. Not interested in reading about women being raped in the slightest.

Thanks, secret creator. When I saw this comment in the fandom secrets you're too lazy to make thread, I looked up Captive Prince & ended up buying it on Kindle.

Shout out to original OP for advertising it to me.

You might be a little disappointed. The only rape-to-love is the slave owner ordering a prostitute to force a blowjob on the slave. Otherwise they don't touch each other until near the end of the second book.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-05 08:15 am (UTC)(link)
That's not true: Laurent makes his slave strip and then strip him and bathe him (right after the slave fight and right before he has him flogged).

ayrt

I'm fine with that. I'd just literally never heard of the series before & became interested thanks to original OP's confession & my research.

Rape-to-love? Err, did you actually read the books?

The fight scenes were the best ones I've ever read in fiction and I read 500 books a year and work with books too. The first book doesn't do the trick yet, but when you get to the second? Pure awesome and extremely well written. If you think this series is crap then the series you enjoyed? Must be the worst ever.

Agreed, the second book is fucking phenomenal. The first one is tied up by traditional slashy fantasy slave tropes, but completely throws that away in the second book for some excellent political maneuvering, worldbuilding, war games, character development and interaction, and some of the best dialogue I've ever read. That's when the series went from a guilty pleasure to one of my favorites. That said, I can't deny the first book is skeevy as hell in comparison to the last following two.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-04 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh hey. I remember this when it was an online original fiction! She sold it? Excellent, good for her. :)

(Anonymous) 2018-11-04 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Internationally successful, too. I saw it translated from English in bookstores in my country last year. *g*

Yeah. It's so hyped up that it's bizarre. It starts as standard escapist rape-but-he-really-did-it-out-of-love, but then the author fell in love with her story's success and started beliveing it genuinely is the best thing since slized bread and it all went south fast. And then it went on and on and on...

(Anonymous) 2018-11-04 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you thinking of the right story? This one didn't have "rape out of love" at all..

(Anonymous) 2018-11-05 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like I read a VERY different story than what you guys are talking about, because while there was rape and shit going down, I don't recall either one of the MCs raping each other. And they didn't even fuck until the third book??? Like???? Que??

hate that series

(Anonymous) 2018-11-04 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Someone I really respect gushed about the series and I tried to read it but it is nothing but really bad rape-to-love fanfiction -- but with a hell of a lot of very rich world building to make it even creepier??? Like it's SO REAL how this guy is being raped and made to love his rapist. I felt rage boiling out of me so hot I wished it were a paper copy so I could burn it.

...given the main couple don't fuck until the third book, are you sure you're thinking of the right books? Really really sure?

I hated it too. I couldn't even finish the first book. Rape to love is NOT my thing & I didn't know that that's what the book was - people were just gushing about gay fantasy & I was really excited & then really disappointed.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-05 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, you are not thinking of the right story. Rape is love never happened. That's not even close to what happened. Especially since they didn't have sex until book 3.
sabotabby: (books!)

[personal profile] sabotabby 2018-11-05 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
It was such crap and I bingeread the whole series in like a day and hated myself. No regrets.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-05 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
They ate extremely well-written books. Honestly, her writing style is absolutely phenomenal. I think the only weak point is the plot, it starts out engaging but kind of fizzles in the third book.

Why are multiple anons talking about rape tropes though. Lol that objectively did not happen. Did you guys read the books beyond the title?

(Anonymous) 2018-11-05 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not one of the anons claiming this was a rape-to-love series, but Laurent did order Damen's rape in the first book.

Loved it. Really wish that Fence sucked less. *sigh*

(Anonymous) 2018-11-06 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yeaaaaah, I've got to agree with you there, OP. I started reading the first book, and it was okay until they got to the part where the loser in the fight got raped. I stopped right there and never went back. Ugh.
