Phobias and Media

Does anyone here have phobias, and do they effect how you consume media? How do you navigate avoiding your phobia in media?

I do NOT like jump scares. They don't bother me as much on TV at home, but I never watch horror movies at the cinema because of it.

I really really really don't like ants. I'm usually okay with, like, one at a time, normal ants; but either large numbers or large ants is a big no from me.
Naturally, a friend pushed me into watching both Ant-Man movies. I liked the movies, I just... covered my face and shuddered through a number of scenes.

My girlfriend has severe trypanophobia, which can be a problem because needles and syringes are way more common in tv and movies than you think, plus they tend to add sound effects so covering her eyes doesn’t always work :/ Most shows with a strong medical component or drug addiction plot line are either no-gos or “proceed with caution”

I have arachnaphobia so anything with spiders in the title/main plot will be avoided. Torture porn and cannibalism is also a no-go.

I have a bit of a problem with fire and burns, and it did mean I largely stopped watching disaster movies in particular. I mean, I'm not that fond of the general ethos of disaster movies anyway, because I'm not that interested in watching a queue of people die in new and interesting ways anyway, but the amount of people who tend to get horribly burned in them definitely does not help.

(In particular, I watched Dante's Peak as a kid, because my mam had it on one night, and the whole 'grandma going wading in a lake of acid' scene did not help)

Oh god, I convinced my parents to let me stay up late to watch Dante's Peak when I was 11 or something and the grandma bit gave me so many nightmares. Just, uggh.

I have utterly ridiculous levels of arachnophobia that I can't watch/play anything with them in and will avoid said thing at all costs. The new updates to the WoW spider models have been... fun. :|

Any horror media that does shit with mirrors I have to avoid as well, I don't know why but that shit fucks me up so bad and I legit can't look into any mirrors or reflective surfaces for 2-3 days and I can't sleep in a room with them in(I can just about manage if they're covered up).

Oh, I hate mirrors! Occulus fucked me up bad.

It's weird because I'm not even scared of them normally, but have something crawl through one or the reflection of the character not match up and it's suddenly NOPE territory for me and I'm a paranoid mess.

I definitely know a movie to avoid, thank you anon.

Horses. I can't even describe why. They just freak me right out. I can tolerate spiders most of the time, but certain media interpretations (looking at you, Skyrim and Limbo) make me jittery.

Open doorways/uncovered windows at night. I always think I'm going to see someone standing there. I used to have recurring nightmares of someone standing at my bedroom door as a teen.

I wouldn't say I avoid any of them as such in media. Sometimes I'll deliberately view them to try and desensitise myself but it hasn't worked yet. :<

I'm pretty severely claustrophobic. It doesn't usually impact my media consumption, but every now and then a very close-shot scene of a character trapped in a confined space freaks me out enough that I have to leave the room.

Unfortunately, I can't really avoid it because it isn't something that can really be warned for in a reasonable way, since it's a matter of execution as well as content.

I have claustrophobia too and I liked Kill Bill a lot but the first time I saw the live burial sequence it was really squirm-inducing.

I'm scared of horses, so no MLP or horse-centric feel-good stories for me. I won't panic if they're just there on-screen, though.

Yes, and yes. I have a major height phobia. That, along with my vertigo, can ruin movies featuring high things. Weirdly, not space. But any movies involving planes and also sometimes the tops of skyscrapers and flying in movies.

Fear of heights and of needles - If I'm watching a movie/TV show, I look away during the scene and hope they'll be over when I look back. If playing a game and going through a high area, I deal with it the same way I do IRL...grip something (mouse or controller) tight and focus on the path, actively ignoring view toward the ground, and move slowly and carefully.

Claustrophobia really only becomes an issue when playing games...I either avoid going there, or hurry through as fast as possible...again the same way I deal with it in IRL. (Oddly, still images of tiny living spaces can trigger it for me, too. Not sure why it's only that specific context.)

I have a phobia of storms;; irl it can be pretty bad, but I think the way I deal with it (aka hide in the basement, curl up and pretend it's not happening;;) helps with facing it on TV... Or rather it isn't so common a fear that it isn't often played as anything more than a backdrop. At least then I can do my best to ignore it, and focus instead on what's happening onscreen. I'm not sure if I just see it differently because it's not happening all around me, but even movies like twister don't trigger my fear because I know none of it is real.
I'll still avoid anything that focuses on thunderstorms, or tornadoes though;;

The only time I'll get legitimately upset is when they air the people stupid enough to 'chase' storms. I've never watched anything of the sort, for obvious reasons, but even hearing about it sends me into a near panic attack. Even writing about it makes me start to shake;; I can't even watch the weather network anymore because they suddenly decided to make it a 'reality' network, where they show Storm Chasers, and Worst Weather of the Week segments, rather than just tell me if I'll need an umbrella, or a coat, or ready a cowering session in my basement this weekend... Ugh... It really sucks...
