Tumblr’s anti-cop rhetoric is always so weird to me. I post a lot about Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and a bunch of my new followers were “kind” enough to tell me it’s copaganda and promoting a false sense of friendliness with law enforcement. Cool. Whatever. Go follow someone else then.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-17 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
More of the US should be anti-cop, tbh. Law enforcement as an agency is corrupt, violent, and horrible.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-17 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
... live somewhere without it, then.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-17 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Without corrupt, violence police that shoot innocent (minority) people? I guess I can move to a European county.

Eh.......

IA that ACAB and I say that as someone whose cousin is a cop. They uphold old, even more racist standards of US society. But the Europeans are hardly better.

Low IQ brainlet detected.

'The europeans', like your ignorant ass even understands the diversity of people culture and law that represents.

LOL... or at least I hope you're making a joke.

[personal profile] toshi_hakari 2018-11-17 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope you're joking because I'm from Austria and the police here are hardly any better. For example, they've killed a black man, Nigerian refugee Marcus Omofuma, in 1999. His killers eventually walked free:

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/austria/1391115/Austrian-policemen-who-killed-refugee-walk-free.html

(There was another, more in depth article about this case I wanted to post, but it included a photo of him dead and I didn't want to trigger anyone and also found it in bad taste)

(Anonymous) 2018-11-17 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, lol. Is THIS a joke? "Uh, 20 years ago in Austria they killed a guy." Compare that to the US where that happens ohhhhh once a month.

Good luck with that.

Virtually everywhere on the planet has stricter immigration laws than the US, and Europe has huge problems with racism and corruption, too.

"Policing in America is institutionally fucked and awful" is not the same as "there is no need whatsoever for law enforcement". Is that really a complicated idea?

Apparently it is to a fair-sized chunk of tumblr. In their defense, the ones yelling about how there should be no law enforcement whatsoever are mostly young teens who generally haven't been involved in the various social justice movements long enough to really appreciate nuance or practicality. Hopefully, they'll learn as they go along. However, I can't say I have the same amount of hope for the ones who are old/experienced enough to know better.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-17 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends what you're talking about somewhat.

If you're talking about ACAB or prison abolitionism, I don't think that either of those really equates to total absence of law enforcement either. And obviously you have your actual-factual anarchists, but those people are (a) rare and (b) usually have somewhat coherent theoretical defenses of their position. Even though I don't personally agree with them (or with prison abolitionism).

If you want to talk about blanket, naive, uncritical, silly "get rid of all laws and law enforcement", I think it's much more a caricature, not a common thing. Responding to any criticism of law enforcement by reducing it to that is bad and silly.

Perhaps where you live, but here they are hard working and on our - the people's - side. They make mistakes too as we all do, but it's not accepted or condoned by anyone. *waves hi from Norway*

the post you're replying to is about the United States...

(Anonymous) 2018-11-17 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"Law enforcement as an agency is corrupt, violent, and horrible." seems a like a wider statement, but hey, no skin off my ass.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-18 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I always assume no matter how universal the subject, Americans are only ever referring to their country, unless they say otherwise.

It's a flaw of the show. The depiction of policing is fundamentally unrealistic to the point of being almost an alternate universe.

That doesn't mean you can't watch and enjoy the show, every show has flaws.

+1

(Anonymous) 2018-11-17 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Doesn't B99 regularly dig into the problems of the police force, though? Holt discusses his experiences as a gay, black officer through the decades; Jake find his hard-drinking childhood idol is an arsehole when in real life, not his memoirs; Terry is arrested walking through his own neighbourhood because someone thinks he doesn't belong there...

Just off the top of my head.

The shows a really long essay on "things should be better".

(Anonymous) 2018-11-17 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, it doesn't happen very often, a couple times in 6 seasons is a nice acknowledgement but it doesn't take that much away from the fundamental premise of the show.

that said

......what sitcom isn't so wildly divorced from reality that it's functionally an alternate universe? I don't watch sitcoms for serious looks at serious issues, I watch sitcoms to make me happy and *distract* me from the real world for a little bit

(Anonymous) 2018-11-17 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that's a totally reasonable thing to want, I'm just not sure whether it's good to have that *and also* have the show be set in a police station

(Anonymous) 2018-11-17 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahahaha. I can't imagine how people have so little going on in their lives they need to "friendly reminder" someone about this.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-17 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just going to point towards secret #4 here

(Anonymous) 2018-11-18 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Good answer. I keep hearing how good this show is and I need to check it out. A.d a lot of folks on Tumblr need to chill.
