[Rebecca, by Daphne du Maurier]

I had to look up Armie Hammer's age because I thought "Hey, Maxim is only supposed to be in his early 40s or thereabouts and the significant age difference is largely due to the narrator being so young, so maybe Mr. Hammer is around that age and OP thinks the character needs to be OLD" ...but turns out Armie Hammer is only 32. I agree - TOO YOUNG. Like, the age difference is a THING, and I'm not even someone who likes age differences.

Same. As someone whose read the book and seen Hitchcock's version I think you need that age difference to emphasize the experience/lifestyle gap between the narrator and Maxim.

Though, potentially controversial opinion time: I feel like if they are going to remake Rebecca, I think it would be interesting and refreshing if they had a non-white actress play the narrator.

I think it would be interesting and refreshing if they had a non-white actress play the narrator.

Having read the Wiki plot summary and assorted notes, I have to agree. Her first name is supposed to be 'unusual' and 'difficult to spell', and she is considered 'different' and 'foreign' to the people around her. So someone not white would be very interesting.

Plus there's been a half-dozen film/TV adaptions of Rebecca. I feel like if you're going to go back to this well an unconventional casting choice would be a good way to set yourself apart. Especially if you're adapting something that was previously adapted by Alfred fucking Hitchcock.

Exactly. And while the woman chosen to play the lead is not a bad actor at all, she's just screechingly white-bread.

The guy i don't even recognize, by face or name, and he inspires nothing. I don't think they, as a couple, will bring much fire.

I agree with everything you said. The age gap is not just canonical, I think, but it makes sense in the context. Maxim is older and more experienced, the heroine is young and relatively sheltered. That puts her at a disadvantage when she becomes the second Mrs. DeWinter, which is absolutely on point.

Casting a non-white actress would help reinforce that sense of isolation and otherness the heroine felt in her new home, so I think that's a great idea.

Casting a non-white actress would help reinforce that sense of isolation and otherness the heroine felt in her new home.

Especially if (when you have them go back to her home) she's the ONLY non-white person there, even among the servants. You wouldn't even need to ever explicitly address race, you'd just have this huge visual reminder of what an outsider she is.

Yeah. It seems doomed to failure, but they're both really hot and the underlying premise is great. Maybe it'll be bad in an interesting way.

And if it's not, the original will still be there.

I have no interest in this. Age differences squick me out. But age difference is kind of the point of this one, isn't it? So weird to cast a guy so young.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-23 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
That's why any age difference at all is pedophilia on tumblr now

I just hope Max isn't constantly calling the heroine a fool and an idiot in the remake. I love me some Hitchcock but that drove me batshit nuts in the original.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-20 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Hitchcock is pretty sexist and his female characters jarring.

Hitchcock was so terrible. What he did to the Birds actress is unconscionable. I have trouble watching his movies. He was such a terrible human being.

I really like most of his movies but I can't watch The Birds but it's for two reasons other than what you referred to.
a) the ending annoys the hell out of me, they should have let him do the original ending.
b) that stupid fucking song the little kids sing during that scene when all the birds are perching and lurking on the jungle gym. I HATE THAT SONG! IT DRIVES ME INSANE!!!

War & Peace

I think I may agree with you.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-20 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I remembered there being an age difference, but I double-checked on the specific ages because it's been forever sine I've read the book or seen the movie. And you're right, in the novel, 'Maxim' de Winter is supposed to be 42 and the second Mrs. de Winter is supposed to be in her early 20s. Weirdly though, for the 1940 movie, though Joan Fontaine was the right age at 22/23 during filming, Laurence Olivier was only 32.

Thinking about it, I would like to see Michael Fassbender as Maxim and maybe someone like Lili Reinhart as the second Mrs. de Winter.

Rebecca is one of my favorite books. Of course they are going to mess it up. It will stick with the Hitchcock version. AH did an INCREDIBLE job.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-20 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Have you seen any of the TV adaptations? There was a BBC one in 1979 starring Jeremy Brett and anon in 1997 with Charles Dance.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-20 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Nayrt

In contrast to the version in this thread, I found Charles Dance too old (he was 50-ish). The actress playing the narrator was good in the part, though. I didn't know there was a version with Jerermy Brett! I'll have to see if I can find that.
