Yep. They sucked.

I honestly never understood how the two of them became a couple in the first place, and I never liked their romance.

So yeah, I guess I'll subscribe to this one.

Same. I liked their characters independently, but they brought out the absolute worst in each other.

I remember liking them as a kid, and honestly on re-watches they do have some moments that are cute, but Ross' insecurities over almost every little thing she did wore thin by the end of the show. I thought they did make good friends funnily enough, but not particularly good partners.

I think it's entirely plausible they they broke up a few months or a year after the finale because they were never able to make it work long-term. To me they were the classic rom-com ship just in TV form, they could do the will-they-won't-they and the Chase, but couldn't hold onto the Happily-Ever-After because they were ultimately incompatible.

Hard same, OP.

I'm watching my way through Friends for the first time right now, and yeah, their romantic relationship is my least favorite part of the show. I'm in S6 right now, and I'm mainly just relieved that there's such a long stretch of time where they're not even remotely together.

Their relationship really brings out the worst in Rachel, which always bums me out because I usually quite like Rachel. And then there's Ross. Oh, Ross, why are you just constantly the worst? I'm not saying the show would be better without Ross; he is an integral part of the show. But I'm honestly not sure I've ever liked a character less, and it pains me to think of Rachel ending up with him.

So yeah, OP, I will happily subscribe to your "They break up like two months later" headcanon.

I like Ross, in all his pathetic glory, but Rachel is probably the least suitable girlfriend he could get.

I remember when the series was first broadcast (in the UK) most of my school friends who talked about it were so caught up in the "omg will they/won't they?" aspect they didn't care about anything else. And when they became a couple who then broke up it was "omg will they/won't they?" get back together over and over again.

As an adult I've rewatched the series several times and Ross and Rachel as a couple leaves a bad taste in my mouth. There's so many things I didn't notice when it was one of THE big deals of the 90s that bug me now. I guess that's a cultural phenomenon for you. Everyone gets swept up in it.

Anyway I agree with you. I doubt they'd last long term.

There's so many things I didn't notice when it was one of THE big deals of the 90s that bug me now.

I feel like their relationship involves a lot of low-key toxic relationship tropes/elements that, in to 90's, we had yet to really have a cultural conversation about. We weren't living in a time when we'd all casually clicked on or past 500 think pieces on toxic (or otherwise unhealthy) relationships telling us what to look for, what it means, and how to feel about it. So a lot of the tropes that now seem like red flags for a shitty relationship didn't seem like red flags at the time.

I definitely agree with what you're saying. I remember even my mum, who was overall fairly progressive for the 90s, regularly said things like "he's doing it because he probably likes you and/or is jealous!" when a boy at school was shitty to me. There's a lot of low-level things we just accepted as the way things are that probably weren't getting talked about yet.

I didn't keep up with the plot of FRIENDS, I mostly watched it every now and then whenever it was on the TV when I was a kid.

However I agree OP. If they spend the entire run of a show will-they-won't-they and going through all sorts of drama, it's hard to believe it magically gets a happily ever after with no future drama.

same same, oh yes same.

It's crazy how popular this awful couple was

Can't find my commment. I was meh about them even if I admit the first breakup did made me emotional. To be honest, Chandler/Monica was my OTP. Knowing they were happy helped during the Ross/Rachel drama. But I'm a softie so I like to imagine Ross and Rachel made it work in the end.

I read "a few minutes later" and I still agreed lol

(Anonymous) 2018-11-25 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Their whole dynamic got really old, really fast. It was especially annoying when more interesting plots got shoved to the side to focus on them

(Anonymous) 2018-11-25 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
My two least-favorite regulars... Honestly on my most recent re-watch, I've been finding most of their story line nearly intolerably obnoxious/tedious. Especially Ross, though. He was always my least favorite but now I find him downright (figuratively) punchable.
