So yeah, I guess I'll subscribe to this one.

I think it's entirely plausible they they broke up a few months or a year after the finale because they were never able to make it work long-term. To me they were the classic rom-com ship just in TV form, they could do the will-they-won't-they and the Chase, but couldn't hold onto the Happily-Ever-After because they were ultimately incompatible.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)Their relationship really brings out the worst in Rachel, which always bums me out because I usually quite like Rachel. And then there's Ross. Oh, Ross, why are you just constantly the worst? I'm not saying the show would be better without Ross; he is an integral part of the show. But I'm honestly not sure I've ever liked a character less, and it pains me to think of Rachel ending up with him.
So yeah, OP, I will happily subscribe to your "They break up like two months later" headcanon.

As an adult I've rewatched the series several times and Ross and Rachel as a couple leaves a bad taste in my mouth. There's so many things I didn't notice when it was one of THE big deals of the 90s that bug me now. I guess that's a cultural phenomenon for you. Everyone gets swept up in it.
Anyway I agree with you. I doubt they'd last long term.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)I feel like their relationship involves a lot of low-key toxic relationship tropes/elements that, in to 90's, we had yet to really have a cultural conversation about. We weren't living in a time when we'd all casually clicked on or past 500 think pieces on toxic (or otherwise unhealthy) relationships telling us what to look for, what it means, and how to feel about it. So a lot of the tropes that now seem like red flags for a shitty relationship didn't seem like red flags at the time.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-24 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)However I agree OP. If they spend the entire run of a show will-they-won't-they and going through all sorts of drama, it's hard to believe it magically gets a happily ever after with no future drama.
