Temp Agencies

(Anonymous) 2018-11-29 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I'm looking for some advice.

Right now I'm looking for a job, but in the meantime I need a way to support myself financially. People have recommended that I sign up for a temp agency and find work that way. The thing is, I have no idea how a temp agency works or how to sign up for one. I have some office/administrative experience, but I don't know if that will be enough. Are temp agencies a good way to get work? And are there any other ways I can generate some cash while I find a permanent position?

Temp agencies are a good way to get work. Most of them have websites that you can sign up on. Also, if you can stomach retail, practically every shop in the western hemisphere is hiring seasonal help right now. Resist any temptation to sell Scentsy or Mary Kay or Pampered Chef or whatever. It's a trap.

However, if you do decide to go the retail route, you might as well work for a store where you buy stuff anyway that has a good employee discount.

This. A good employee discount is more money in your pocket if you're buying things that you were already going to buy anyway.

I have found good work through temp agencies. If you know how to do basic office stuff at all I think it's a good idea to sign up for one. (I don't type that well but they were still able to find me a couple of jobs.) Back when I did it I went into their office but that was a long time ago. But I'm sure they're pretty user-friendly about it because they want people to sign up.

My experience isn't recent, but unless temp agencies have changed drastically, don't sweat it. You can google for one near to you and find out how to sign up. The one I used was this one:

https://www.kellyservices.us/

They had me come in and fill in a questionnaire about what admin skills I had, how fast I could type, etc. You don't need prior experience, though I imagine it helps. If you know stuff like Excel and Word, that'll help, too. Then they give you a call if they find a position that'll suit you.

It sounds like you're psyching yourself out a little, so let me level with you - generally, expectations are super low when it comes to temps. Dress neatly and appropriately with good personal hygiene, be punctual and reliable and try your best. It may lead to a more longterm position, you never know.
