Maybe it's because I'm only a casual fan and haven't read the extended universe books, etc. but... Snoke's death was a surprise because it didn't seem like the films made much use of his character before killing him off? It felt like a waste.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-06 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing that confuses me about this is that I'm not sure *what* is actually being wasted?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-06 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Well yes, that was sort of my point. Character death ought to have a narrative significance to it when it's a single character that's the focus of the scene. But when you kill off an underdeveloped villain, that has less of an impact.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-06 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess my point is that I felt it had the impact and significance it needed

(Anonymous) 2018-12-07 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I see. That's a rather different thing than your comment said.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-07 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see how? If Snoke did everything he needed to do, then it follows that he wasn't wasted

(Anonymous) 2018-12-07 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
To you, perhaps. I'm not sure it follows that *I* cannot feel differently.

the impact of that event/scene isn't "omg snoke, the cool and terrifying villain, is dead"

the impact is "omg Kylo Ren, the tortured unhinged self-absorbed abuse victim just fucking murdered the dude who psychically groomed him for years, now he's still unhinged and self-absorbed but he's grabbing agency with both fists let's see what he fucking does with it"

I feel like "he isn't developed enough to kill, we should develop him more and THEN kill him off," when the series already has several villains + the heroes making huge mistakes that are their own worst enemy, is sort of a weird reverse sunk cost fallacy

live!Snoke added less to the story than dead!snoke does, and that's okay because he's not the villain we're actually engaged with

(Anonymous) 2018-12-07 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I could see the argument for this take, but I think it'd be more powerful if we'd seen more of Snoke's psychic grooming.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-07 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, ditto. It’s not like I liked Snoke and wanted to see more of his character, but the psychic grooming thing didn’t really show in the films that much. It would’ve been cool if Kylo Ren, idk, hallucinated conversations with Vader that the audience was shown were actually with Snoke or something. It’s not grooming exactly if Kylo Ren knew Snoke was doing it.

This. So much this. All of this.

Snoke was boring, agreed.

Palpatine & Snoke were used almost identically, but Palpatine had presence & incited a feeling of dread & fear in 8-year-old me.

Not sure if Snoke doesn't have the same effect because I'm older & less easily impressed or because of the difference between a real actor with makeup vs an actor playing a CGI character. Or a bit of both.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-06 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
The CGI thing played a big part of it for me. Not menacing enough when obviously fake, IMO.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-06 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Snoke getting killed off was one of the only things I actually liked about TLJ.
Also: He had a really dumb name.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-06 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just disappointed that they didn't do anything interesting with him. An unknown element from the Unknown Regions has the potential for really interesting stuff but they did nothing with it.

But then I feel that way with pretty much everything in the sequel trilogy. Good ideas but terrible execution all around.

A major flaw of the prequels...

(Anonymous) 2018-12-06 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Anakin/Palpatine had more on-screen sexual chemistry than Anakin/Padme. That opera scene, wooof!

(Anonymous) 2018-12-06 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
TBF, Palpatine had chemistry with everyone.

Re: A major flaw of the prequels...

(Anonymous) 2018-12-07 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Whereas Natalie Portman often has very little sexual chemistry with anyone. Great character actress, yes, but really sucks at anything portraying romantic relationships.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-06 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
If he was ever actually intended to be the main villain, then yeah, I found him really boring. But I really like him as something of a MacGuffin. He is the thing that brings Kylo Ren to the point we find him at in TFA. He also serves to somewhat obfuscate the nature of Kylo Ren's character and the role Kylo is going to play in the story, by positioning him as an underling, and even somewhat obsequious. Supreme Leader Snoke creates a pigeon hole for Kylo Ren. It's an odd pigeon hole that we sense is ill-fitting, but there he is in it. Until he kills Snoke, at which point the full nature of Kylo Ren's character and the role Kylo is going to play in the story gels substantially.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-07 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
My main issue is that we mostly get told about Snoke's influence on Kylo but never really shown. And that's never a good thing.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-08 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS. I would be much more sympathetic to Kylo Ren's character if we ever actually saw HOW Snoke influenced him or ANYTHING that had actually pushed him towards the Dark Side in the first place.

I have to agree. If they had gone more into how he got into Ben's mind in the movies then he might have been interesting but it just felt like he was a rip off Jaba with force powers.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-07 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
If they'd spent twenty minutes less on dumb "let's free these critters even though it doesn't make any sense" scenes and used that to actually show how he got into Kylo's head...

I'm sad that after that gold little number he wears was revealed that he wasn't more of a ham.
