Who Should Host The Oscars?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-07 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Clearly, it's now an emergency, so who do you want to see host the Oscars? Who would you choose if you were in charge of it?

Since I don't follow awards shows, what's the emergency?

Re: Who Should Host The Oscars?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-08 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
It's not actually an emergency, I was being facetious.

But basically, no one wanted the Oscars, then they finally convinced Kevin Hart to do it, but there was a controversy where he refused to apologize for a bunch of super homophobic tweets and so he ended up withdrawing from hosting like a day after agreeing to it, and now I don't know who's going to host instead.

They couldn't find a host and when they finally did someone dug up some homophobic tweets from a decade ago. Recreational outrage ensued. The Academy demanded he issue a formal apology and he decided it wasn't worth it. They're scrambling to find a replacement but no one wants to do it.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-08 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, it's ridiculous and absurd to expect someone to apologize for being homophobic before being paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to go on stage in one of the biggest television events of the year

Re: Who Should Host The Oscars?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-08 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Is he homophobic? There is nothing in nearly ten years to indicate that. There's a lot to show that he isn't. And he did apologise. What he didn't do was issue the Academy's formal apology. And they wonder why no one wanted the job.

Re: Who Should Host The Oscars?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-08 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know what's in anyone's heart. I do know that the things he said were very homophobic. I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for a formal apology for something like that.

Re: Who Should Host The Oscars?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-08 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Based on tweets and jokes and interviews, yeah. He is probably a bit homophobic.

And he didn't apologize until today. And I doubt his views have changed.

Re: Who Should Host The Oscars?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-08 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Ahaha. I like how your time limitations on proof of homophobia somehow don't include, you know, the various homophobic remarks he made. Because that's only fair, right? We shouldn't assume someone's homophobic just because they made some homophobic tweets and jokes and then never expressed any remorse for their bigotry.

BTW, his Kevin Hart: Seriously Funny special was in 2010. He makes a lengthy homophobic joke within the first ten minutes about how awful it'd be if his son turned out to be gay. He's not homophobic, you know! It's just that he's a heterosexual man, so of course his son being gay would be terrible and he thinks everyone should actively discourage any signs of teh gay in their male children by yelling at them to stop.

Also, nobody wanted the job before Kevin Hart's resignation. It's a difficult, thankless job to host a long award banquet that struggles for ratings. This has been common knowledge for years. It's definitely not because the mean ol' Academy have a problem with Kevin Hart's homophobia and wish to hold him responsible for the words that come out of his mouth.

NAYRT but, is the AYRT right that it was something he said a decade ago? I mean, why even dig it up if he hasn't done or said anything recently that indicates he still feels that way?

Is it possible he dropped out less because he 'didn't want to give an apology' and more because of the ridiculous level of scrutiny involved in agreeing to the position?

Re: Who Should Host The Oscars?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-08 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
It's not like the scrutiny was going to get worse than it already was

If he wants to stand on his honor and never apologize for anything that's his business but I don't think it's any unreasonable ask

I think "recreational outrage" applies to a lot of this sort of thing that happens right now. But Hart's tweets were genuinely homophobic, and he has refused to apologize.
