What are your favorite changes done in an adaptation?

I have said it once and I will say it again, the ending of My Sister's Keeper the movie is 100x better than the ending in the book.

The romance in the Angelic Layer anime.

Cutting out Tom Bombadil. TBH, I don't love that part of the book anyway. But it really just would not have worked in film form.

Tom Bombadil doesn't really fit in the book, either. he was a more traditional fairy tale type character Tolkien made up to entertain his kids when they were very young. This was years before he wrote the LOTR books.

I agree. That is kind of considered blasphemy in the Tolkien fandom. But it doesn't work for me.

Yup.

It sort of works in the books, sort of, but for the films it would have been too jarring so I really don't mind they cut him out.

The movie version of West Side Story got rid of the biggest mistake in the play, which was putting a goofy, funny song ("Gee, Officer Krupke!") immediately after Riff and Bernardo got killed. I don't know what they were thinking.

Yes! The song fits much better where it is in the movie.

I also like that they moved "I Feel Pretty" earlier into the movie. It makes Maria finding out about the rumble even heavier, emotionally.

10 Things I Hate About You doesn't just change the time period but the attitudes of the characters.

There's a different modern take on The Taming of the Shrew with Rufus Sewell that doesn't manage it as well. It's more faithful to the play but it's almost unwatchable to me because it just didn't make any kind of sense in a modern setting. There are parts where I can see they tried to make it make sense and other parts they kept true to the play that they really, really shouldn't have.

Everything about the Practical Magic movie.

The Disney ending of Hunchback of Notre Dame (sue me, I hate depressing endings).

The Henry/Elizabeth relationship in The White Princess (especially them changing the rape scene from the book... maaaaaan, I loathed that book).

I also feel like there was an anime that changed something from the manga that I adored, but I can't remember.

YES! Practical Magic, the book, was...really unfun. I read another of her books, too, and it was much the same. Blech.

The Megan Followes adaptation of Anne of Green Gables cut out some repetition of Anne winning over various cranky old characters and consolidated them to good effect, IMO. It's not a strict adherence to canon, but it captures the spirit of the books perfectly.

I agree except that there was one old guy whose name escapes me right now who I really thought was a great character and who I missed in the movies.

The changes made to Ellen Brody's character and Matt Hooper's character in 'Jaws', plus that they left out some of the really boring and nonsensical secondary plot lines that were in the book.

Seconded.

All movie versions of Freaky Friday are better than the book because they switch back and forth between the mother's and daughter's viewpoints. The book is all in first person from the daughter's point of view and that makes it not nearly as entertaining.

I think even the author realized this because there's a lesser known sequel book where the same switch happens between the girl's brother and their dad, and that one does the alternating points of view.
