Hmmm. I can see where you're coming from, but I'm not sure I agree. I thought Rey was generally well-written in TLJ, and while there were slight issues with Poe and Finn, they were mostly the result of the script's issues with pacing and plotting.

I do agree they spent more time with Kylo than I would have liked, and it definitely didn't make me like his character more (although I still think he's an effective villain), but I liked the movie a lot overall.

Hayden Christensen isn't that bad of an actor. He's just not a good enough actor to overcome the terrible writing and direction in the Prequels. Hell, Ewan McGregor barely pulled it off,despite being Ewan Fucking McGregor.

I feel Kylo is written the way Anakin SHOULD have been written.

Hard disagree. I've got issues with how Anakin's written, and the dialogue in the Prequels is awkward at best. But they did, at least, lay the groundwork for Anakin's rise and fall and potential redemption. He had motivations and relationships and ambitions. All Kylo's got is "I'll show them all" hissyfits and epic amounts of entitlement and self indulgence.

I wasn't really into how Finn and Poe were written, but this is going a bit far.

I had my issues, particularly with Poe, though I liked the movie overall. But I tend to doubt they were trying to make Kylo "look better" by making other people look worse. They all still look way better than Kylo and I don't even hate Kylo.

Uh, I hope I don't have to point out that I think Kylo is a Very Bad Person. I just don't hate him as a character. I don't get why people romanticize him, though at the end of the day he's a fictional character so I don't stress over it.

Yeah, I HATE that we're supposed to take that as romantic. Calling a girl nothing isn't romantic. It's not that I don't like a good enemies-to-lovers now and then, but when you start out your association with one-sided torture, that's HARD to come back from. And there's a difference between calling someone nothing during your enemies phase and then developing respect for them, and telling someone they don't matter and you're the only one who sees value in them and having it portrayed as romantic.

It's not that I ship her with Finn instead and am bitter that it seems to be going the other way-- I don't, I like their relationship as something very meaningful and entirely platonic. It's just that at this point I cannot see any way of redeeming Kylo Ren as a potential romantic interest, and I'm not sure I'll buy his redemption as a person, either.

I think he's a good villain, I think Driver does a good job with the role, but at this point there's just nothing about him I WANT to see redeemed.

Honestly I don't think Rey/Kylo is going to be any sort of end game. I don't even think romance was what they were going for at all.

I really, honestly don't think it was meant to be taken as romantic. I think Reylo is inevitable no matter how I or anyone else feels about it, but I think that specific line was meant to be fucked up. We know it, Rey knows it, and Kylo realises pretty damn soon after he says it. He just doesn't know how to emotionally connect with anyone.

The entire point of that exchange is that Rey REJECTS it. Because she knows that shit isn't healthy and she won't compromise her ideals for someone who refuses not to be selfish. I think he will learn from this mistake; his entire body language at the end of the film foreshadows that. But the entire point of that line and scene is that it's Kylo getting it wrong and Rey rightfully rejecting him. The line indicates Kylo's romantic interest in Rey; it's not romantic in itself.

Is this where I blame fandom for warping the the main heroes' characterizations? Watch TFA again and you'll find that Finn is "a bit of a buffoon", Poe is a "hothead", and Rey is a "lost little girl" in that movie. And since so little time has passed between TFA and TLJ, it makes sense that these things are still true.

As someone who pays no attention to Star Wars fandom outside of what filters through here and only watches the movies, this is the impression I get too. Like, the movie has some very clear writing issues, in particular regarding pacing and subplots, but a lot of the characterization complaints I see seem to come out of nowhere.

Side tangent: Kylo Ren being a whiny little bitch of a villain is actually what I like about him. He feels grounded in the kind of mindset that deeply toxic people end up buying into in the real world. Which... Yeah, I can understand why that isn't necessarily the kind of thing everyone would want to watch. But I appreciate it. And I appreciate Rey being optimistic enough to at least try to bring him back out of it, even if it looks like that was futile.
