Prince Philip's 97 year old ass shouldn't be driving never mind causing accidents. People over 75 should need a Doctor to certify they are still fit to drive not just self certify and it should be yearly at least.

yup.

that is when a clear change in reaction times happens. risks of strokes and heart attacks increase even more than before. best be safe for them and all other road users.

my type one diabetic fam get checked more often than abled drivers. better safe than deaths. if anything 75 is too high

75 is quite generous. I'd actually start at 60.

I'd be for testing every 5 years, then every 2 years after 60, every year after 70.

Test all along! My aunt that won't admit or accept that her vision is getting blurry when it obviously is, is just as dangerous as a 70 year old even if she's 50.

It wouldn't be so bad if people could just swallow their dang pride. Mom's 80 this year, and is fine for the most part, but her ability to see in the dark has taken a complete nosedive. She doesn't drive at night, because her pride isn't worth her life. More people need to value their life (and the lives of others) over their pride.

God, yes. I read a statistic once about how most people keep driving around 5-10 years after they become a more dangerous driver. It's scary how many people are out there driving when they realistically have no business being behind the wheel of anything bigger than a golf cart, and probably not even that.

Of course, half the problem here in America is that everything is set up for cars and our public transportation systems suck, so once you give up driving you effectively give up your independence and life gets more difficult. But the inability of lots of people to admit that they're no longer good at it is also a major issue, which drives me nuts. Your pride isn't worth your life, or someone else's for that matter.

Stupid shutdown. We're still required to file everything, even for the hearings that won't happen. And yet, the government is refusing to give us information we need to write the things to be filed. It is really frustrating.

I miss that time around the mid-2000s when slashy subtext was considered exciting rather than labeled queerbaiting.

The thing is, in the mid-2000s, it was harder for creators to actually give us full on slash text. These days it isn't. Back then, subtext was all we could get most of the time (with a few exceptions). Now they can go full on, so only doing subtext is kind of queerbaiting.

I don't mind subtext that doesn't go anywhere, but I do mind jokes at the expense of the ships and the fans. Looking in your direction, SPN and Sherlock.

On the other hand, half of what's claimed as slashy subtext really isn't, it's just excessive ship goggles and an excuse to get into slapfights with other people on tumblr.

Public restrooms aren't that bad and are cleaner than most home bathrooms.

Bar bathrooms, however, are an entirely different class and the work of the devil himself.

If there's one thing this decade gets right, it's that most truck stop restrooms are actually cleaner than rest areas these days.

Re: Controversial Opinions / Venting

(Anonymous) 2019-01-19 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
I think "Don't criticize something if you can't do it better yourself" is a fair request if the person criticizing is actually in the position to try and do it better. The main example I'm thinking of is writers who criticize other writers, especially amateur writers criticizing professionals. Most of the time what they write is not any better than what they criticize, but clearly they think that it is. JK Rowling and George RR Martin are better writers than Random Fanfic Author #12398120398 who writes long hot takes on Tumblr about how those authors are problematic/talentless hacks.

Re: Controversial Opinions / Venting

(Anonymous) 2019-01-19 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that's fair - amateur writers don't have professional editors, publishers, etc. That's like asking film students criticizing a film to make their own movie, if they don't like it. Or an amateur model criticizing a pro's photo to shoot their own if they don't like it, without a camera crew and professional photo editor.

On the other hand, if they criticize something, I think they open themselves up to crit of their own work and are now fair game for criticizing regarding their work in the same area. They don't get to claim "you can't criticize MY work, I'm not a professional" after the fact. If an amateur can critize pros, then surely amateurs can criticize amateurs too.

I dunno, I wouldn’t criticize, say, another cosplayer for doing a shitty job unless they were tearing other cosplayers’ work down, and maybe not even then, but damn is it frustrating when actual professional costumers, with money and time and well-honed skillsets, fuck up in obvious ways. Like, no, I probably can’t do better, I’m an amateur and my fine motor skills kind of suck. That’s why I’m not getting paid to draft patterns or sew or fabricate props or whatever. I still wouldn’t go up to them and say “hey, your work sucks,” but I might rant here in the GC or something.

Fanfic authors who put untagged "surprise!trans" content in their fic because they think themselves as so very progressive are shitty and demonstrate that they don't actually care about trans people (whose dysphoria this can trigger like hell, fuck you very much) but only about their fetish and/or the woke points/virtue signalling.

I'm ace and I don't care about seeing me represented (I so care about seeing me wrongly represented, though). Someone telling me that there is an ace character in a book/show/movie doesn't make me want to check it out more.
I also ship and watch/read smut.
