It hardly sounds fair to call an actual person a Manic Pixie Dream Girl.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-20 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Is OP referring to a person or a persona? I automatically assume presenters are showing us their persona and not every action, idea, or word is true to the person delivering it.

I've known a few MPDGs in real life. They're exhausting.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-21 11:39 am (UTC)(link)
No you haven't. It is literally contradictory to the definition of manic pixie dream girl for a real person to be one.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-20 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
That's certainly a take.

God this show caused so much drama on a friend's Facebook page earlier this week. Like, I thought she and another friend were actually going to properly fall out over it!

(Anonymous) 2019-01-20 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Ohhhh my god the arguments are so frustrating to read!

(Anonymous) 2019-01-20 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
What about this show causes drama?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-20 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Whether or not it's good to throw things away, basically. There are some things (most notably books) that people probably do fetishize. And also, I think the underlying concept of "sparks joy" is a harder thing to talk about than people realize - we seem to have a hard time, as a culture, dealing with the idea of joy, and I think people find the idea of things "sparking joy" faintly absurd at times.

How DARE she be positive and short.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-20 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
You are the gross one for referring to short, positive people as 'elf' and 'pixie dream girl'. Sorry she is doing a job she enjoys while not being a miserable jerk.

I mean I find it weird that you're trying to affix a fictional-archetype onto a real person.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-20 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it is creepy too, but for another reason: I hate her plastered-on smile with a vengeance. She seems so utterly uncomfortable and contrived that I halfway pity her and halfway resents her dishonesty.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-20 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
How do you know she's dishonest? Maybe she's not comfortable in front of the camera?

My smile in photos ALWAYS looks fake because I hate 'posing' for photos. I'm not being dishonest, I just don't know what to do with my face when people say 'stand there and smile!!'

(Anonymous) 2019-01-20 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you make a living being in front of a camera?

+1

I mean I wouldn't call it creepy, but I couldn't get past the first episode because I found her so unlikeable. The glued-on smile, the hokey little ceremony at the beginning, the thanking of inanimate objects, yuck. And I'm sorry to say the language barrier is also a bit jarring and off-putting in a show like this, where deep communication with your clients is as important as if you were their therapist.

It's a shame because I found the family and their plight in the first episode sympathetic, and I love watching those shows for the human aspect, and I'm sure I would enjoy the other families similarly, but I just can't get over my dislike for MK.

I'm sure this is the reason you kept this a secret, but I dislike this whole secret. You seem mean, OP. Maybe you're not, I don't know, but the whole secret seems rude and unfair.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-23 09:05 am (UTC)(link)
yes unfair and mean she is redhead

I think she's adorable. I think her 'system' only works with people who really want to tidy up/purge, but i love that she's so invested in it, and that she teaches her kids to do it, and it's just an automatic part of their life.

I really enjoyed listening to her speak Japanese all through the show, it was...relaxing, i dunno. I like listening to non-English languages.

I'm pretty sure the MPDG approach would be the opposite of streamlining and simplifying your personal spaces.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-21 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
As a short person (taller than her but only by 3 inches) it seems unfair to include her size in this...

(Anonymous) 2019-01-21 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
How dare an entrepreneur come across as believing in her methodology! Surely her view on it doesn't affect her livelihood, so she can definitely afford not to be extremely polite/positive about her methods.
