Russian Yuri is an obnoxious violent little brat and I hope he gets seriously injured in the inevitable next season. I never cared about him as a rival for Japanese Yuri nor gave a shit about his evolution as a skater because he went from "prodigy with a bad attitude" to "even better prodigy with a bad attitude".

If it makes you feel any better, it's pretty likely he'll do permanent damage to his joints by pushing himself too hard, and have to retire before he hits 25.

It's hilarious when people treat Yuri On Ice with realism when the skating statistics are impossible for the best IRL skaters to achieve and oh homophobia is non-existent. Russian Yuri's joints will be just fine, because it's a feel-good anime and he's not a real person.

Um, on your first point - people WERE saying Yuri's score was unrealistic. Until real life Yuzuru Hanyu beat that score. No, the show did mor address homophobia, really could not have been addressed in a warm hearted 12 episode ice skating anime. But I absolutely believe the series would take injury. That really doesn't seem too dark or anything.

*Is* there going to be an s2? I thought there was an upcoming prequel movie.

There hasn't been an announcement, no. Just the movie which is probably a prequel (but we know basically nothing about it). Still, the anime industry does a good job of being completely tight-lipped about things until they are officially revealed, so who knows.

Eh, I grew up in the ice skating arena with some kids that were definitely aiming for Olympic goals, and honestly Russian Yuri is more what you found in that group than either Japanese Yuri or even Victor. There's enormous pressure to perform and be perfect, so kids do kind of often get warped into snobby little assholes whose only outlet is violent outbursts. It sucks. Especially because if they do get injured and it costs them their career, it ruins their entire lives. And often, their families will make it infinitely worse. It's just sad.

I thought he was a brat, but I did like him because he reminded me of some of my students (minus the comedic violent tendencies).
