I tried to be open minded about the fat acceptance / HAES movement but a brief scroll through the blog my friend tried to get me to read about it was enough to make me so mad.

Giving people bad advice and telling them to ignore their doctors concerns because it's discrimination when they're honest about the fact that being obese puts you at risk for a multitude of problems? That's fucked up.

I couldn't read past a mother posting to assure her followers that she was going to ignore the diet the doctor prescribed for her child because she thinks diets are torture and mommy knows best.

I'm genuinely horrified that these people exist and it has nothing to do with their clothing size. They're insane.

In general I'm pretty pro-fat acceptance. I think that people can be healthy and fit at a pretty wide range of sizes.

But, I am soooo not a fan of the HAES movement. To me, it's like the anti-vaxx movement. It's totally anti-science. There's NO WAY to be healthy at the extreme ends of the scale. But it's like a weird mix of anti-vax and pro-ana/mia crap. It's enabling eating disorders while touting itself as, like, super scientific.

I agree. And I am at the extreme end. Well, not the end. But definitely at a weight you can't be healthy at. And I know it. And I'm trying to change that, in spite of health issues and medications making that difficult.

But it is also true that within the middle, there is a wider range where you can be healthy and unhealthy than many people acknowledge. You can be a size 18 and be healthy. You can also be a size 2 and be unhealthy.

There is a legit problem with doctors attributing all medical problems to fat, tho. Believe me, I've had joint problems from before I was fat and they've been consistently ignored.

That's a valid concern and I hope that you do find a doctor who is willing to listen to you. I think any good doctor will make weight loss a priority in treating joint problems because it can definitely exacerbate existing conditions, but I hope that you find answers about the underlying cause. I know from my own experience how frustrating it is to live with undiagnosed health issues. Sometimes doctors suck.

In this case I'm overweight because I can't do as much because I'm in pain and instead of the pain being treated, I'm instead told to lose weight and that's... Not helpful at all.

Even if there are valid medicals reasons to lose weight, that's still not a reason to shame patients over their weight

and yet

This. I don’t believe that it’s possible to be healthy no matter what size you are, but I think doctors attributing fat people’s health problems to their fatness causes way more issues than the HAES movement. I’m obese, and I can just ignore the occasional HAES activist telling me that my obesity is NBD.

But my (also fat) doctor starting and ending every checkup and conversation with “lose weight,” and refusing to consider other causes/treatments, means that I’ve avoided going to the doctor even when I really needed to. I need tests and medicine where appropriate, if I want weight-shaming I can walk down the street in a crop top.
