As someone who did grad school in history, I just find that people who complain about historical inaccuracy usually don't have history backgrounds and are very inconsistent with what they point out as inaccurate.

As someone who's doing history in grad school right now, I find that I'm only really annoyed by inaccuracy if the creator(s) make a big fuss about how smart and accurate and superior their thing is and then it's just...not. if they're blatantly not caring whether they're accurate and just having fun, it's different.

This is me also.

I'm also in this weird place where historical inaccuracies bug me sometimes but not others and a lot of it depends on the era or event being depicted. There are some things where we don't know a lot about it. As long as everything seems to be in a consistent, realistic ballpark for what we do know I'll allow some spicing up. Or even if you obey the rules you set up in your own damned interpretation that's better than nothing. But it will still bother me if creators act like everything they did is 100% true facts and play up to any viewer belief that it's 100% true facts.

But when you're talking about historical periods (usually modern) where we have LOADS on record then yes, historical inaccuracy becomes more bothersome in general. I still don't see the point in raging too hard about it though and will happily have some cool conversations with people about the real events.

Overall I'm good with accepting most things as historical inspired fiction. It's like someone wrote AU fanfiction of an actual historical event I guess?

When people complain about actual fantasy in a generic medieval like society being inaccurate though I just role my eyes.

Yeah I would say, mostly, if I can see what they were going for aesthetically, and if it seems decent, I'm willing to roll with it even if it's not accurate

How common is it to find zero historical inaccuracy in historical fiction?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-17 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
i was gonna ask - like, how cut and dried is historical accuracy anyway? ofc there's obvious ones, but i watch a lovely lady on youtube who does historical garments with period-appropriate methods for fun and she talks a lot about how she had to speculate on how this and that detail was done and how she fudged so-and-so method because technically it *could* have been used in that period even if it became popular in a later one....
etc. etc.

i don't mind people being bothered by it tho to be clear, i think it's a valid complaint. inaccuracies of any kind can throw people off!

IME, some inaccuracies are so egregious, you don't need a degree to notice.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-18 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup, this. I mean, most of us don't have a degree in whatever fandom we're following, but if it's something we're interested in, we'll notice the inconsistency. Same goes for people who are interested in specific historical periods. It's pretty easy to notice glaring inaccuracies.

If you don't care about historical inaccuracies, that's fine. I'm not quite sure why so many people feel that it's tying into "and you think you're so superior for noticing that". No, I noticed it because it's just something that irks me.
