Re: ESL people: Why did you learn English?

X-Men: Evolution on Cartoon Network then X-Men comics and all the fandom around them. Well I was taught some English in highschool before that but I was more interested in learning Spanish at the time; it's only two years ater graduation that suddenly I found some interest in it and got better. (Helps a lot with scientific papers, too...)

Eh yeah but there are ways to write a story with gay characters in it that tackles those other values without having the gay characters be totally socially open and accepted by everyone. You don't have to make a character all about open gayness because they're gay. Society might not even have to notice, or some have done the actually historically accurate politely-ignoring-and-pretending-they-dont-know thing, without being all oh, we're totally-modernly-woke-regarding-LGBT-stuff-and-yet-curiously-nothing-else.

It's not like gay people didn't exist back then, or have lives outside of being gay, right?

Re: ESL people: Why did you learn English?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-18 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't really actively decide, I just started reading fanfic and most of it was in English so I just gradually got better at it. I unconsciously learned a lot about understanding words/expressions in context rather than constantly looking up every little word I didn't understand in a dictionary.

Re: Whatcha doing today, FS?

Played computer games for a while, drank some coffee, going to go eat some lunch now probably

Thrilling!

(Anonymous) 2019-02-18 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, it's definitely possible. It's totally a matter of preference. Sometimes you just want a Regency romance where the characters get married and also you want those characters to be gay.

New things you watched/read etc.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-18 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Found anything new? How do you like it?

Re: Whatcha doing today, FS?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-18 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
solidarity, fellow grading anon.
I mean, all semester, I repeat and repeat and repeat the key things. And even explicitly say "So, in your papers, you should..." and "So, in your papers, you cannot..." And what do they reliably do? Bah, and double humbug.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-18 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I really noticed this when watching a recent netflix show--they had a Vietnam flashback with a m/m romance, like they were dancing together on the dance floor.... And I don't think that sort of openness was historically accurate?? It really threw me out of the story.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-18 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Quite frankly, anybody who would let something like this affect their views on racism and homophobia was already an idiot to start with.

AYRT

Yeah, and I totally get that - nothing wrong with a story like that. But to me that'd be changing the values of the times SO MUCH regarding gender roles, social roles, the social hierarchy, politics, etc etc beyond simply "gay" that it's an AU, and it'd be weird to call it "historical" at all.

That would be a "fantasy period AU fic" to me.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-18 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
But, like, period-typical values include things other than views on homosexuality, and for me, those particular values are some of the less interesting and entertaining ones to see people navigate.

That's valid, but I feel differently. If the fic is a historical gay love story, then the period typical values surrounding homosexuality are by far the most relevant to the story and, for me, the most interesting.

Now if the fic is something other than a gay love story, I agree with you that other period-typical values may be a lot more relevant and interesting. If my het pairing is in, say, a Jane Austen AU, it's entirely possible that the period-typical values surrounding men having sex with men may not come up at all, and that's fine with me. Instead, the focus will likely be placed heavily on the period-typical values and attitudes pertaining to the "proper" behavior for, and treatment of, girls and women. And in the case of a het Jane Austen AU, those would be the period-typical values I would most want to see explored. If instead the fic created a world in which women were respected as the equals of men and were free to own property, dress practically, have sexual experiences, and go where the pleased when the pleased, I would think it was a phenomenal improvement on reality, but I wouldn't be interested in reading the fic.

It bothers me that you've got so many paragraphs of "if this guy faked being attacked, fuck him," and not a single word of "if he was attacked for real, fuck the attackers."

It's not like there's any shortage of indisputable racist-and-homophobic violence out there. The mass-murder at Pulse wasn't even three years ago. This guy's story is totally credible. Why be so blase about it?

And "this violence that reflects badly on conservatives was all faked!" is a bog-standard right-wing talking point. No matter how obviously real (murdered children! pipe bombs in people's mailboxes!) the situation is. Why are people so willing to knee-jerk react like maybe this time they're on to something?

Not to mention: the official statement from the Chicago police is that the "it's a hoax!" media reports "are unconfirmed by case detectives," and "we have no evidence to support their reporting and their supposed CPD sources are uninformed and inaccurate."

The Dragon Prince S2

I quite liked it! Animation was definitely better. They made one or two pretty weird mistakes (or I missed something) but that's okay.
Love the new sparkly elf but, unpopular opinion: I'm not fond of his voice. I mean, pretty elves and deep voices can work very well (hi Fenris) and I don't actually have that much of a problem with his voice itself (though I do think it doesn't fit all that well) but more with the way the VA speaks. He's slurring his lines a lot and I think that never works well in combination with animations. It's why I had some issues with the English Castlevania dub as well.
(Also, his voice reminds me of the "you touch my tralala" song and... just. No.)

I assumed anyone with half a brain would know that if it is true then fuck the attackers. unfortunately, it is looking more and more like he faked it.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-18 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Who does what, make up an awful story? Lots of people have done it (including the Chicago PD, who is supposed to be investigating this).

I'm with you, OP. While I enjoy reading about my ships navigating the values of the time, it's also fun to just read about them falling in love.

Pride and Prejudice is a great example. It was a het couple, but they still had reasons they didn't get together right away. I love a good historical AU where the couple can't be together for reasons OTHER than they're gay.

Been playing Apex Legends. I still can't shoot for shit but unlike Fortnite, I don't have to build. So maybe I can actually kill people on this!

I watched the first episode of The Umbrella Academy and enjoyed it. Hopefully I don't give up on it. D:

I have listened to like... 6 different cover versions of the song "It's Nothing To Me" over the last 2 days

IDK why it's just such a good song

+100000

I was at work when I first heard about this, and the dickhead beside me was positively crowing over it, scouring the internet for the most condemnatory "news coverage" he could find, describing the story to his buddies with details that, as far as I can tell, he'd either made up himself or his ultra-biased "news sources" had decided to infer. I mean this guy was absolutely relishing his in "righteous" outrage, and how he now got to feel vindicated in a bunch of his racist, liberal-hating opinions.

Hearing this asshat, I realized that even though what Smollet did was seriously fucking stupid and worthy of shame, I was more disgusted by these white, straight, conservative assholes' responses to the story than I was by what Smollet did.

Make no mistake, he is a douche.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-18 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
From a reader's perspective, OP: some fic is better than no fic and finished fic is always better than unfinished fic. Even if it seems terrible to you and you know that you could (potentially) have done better, I guarantee you it will mean the world to some fan out there who will treasure it and read it over and over.

(i have an old terrible self-insert mary sue fic that a few people love so much that I can't even be ashamed of it anymore--it brought them happiness).

You brought a little more creativity into the world, and that's never a bad thing. + 1...still a plus!

So much this.

I did like S1, there were some good elements to it. But S2 is so much more what I wanted from a Star Trek show. I've gone from feeling like "this is an OK sci-fi series that just happens to be called Star Trek" to "Now -this- is Star Trek!"
