What older classics in the media looks super racist to modern eyes?

a lot of old Disney movies have some really racist crap in them, although I wouldn't necessarily call all old Disney movies "classics", even though Disney calls them that.

I'm not sure what this adds to the discussion, but congratulations on having sophisticated tastes, I guess?

In Enid Blyton's Noddy books, there were characters (often minor villains) who were Gollywog dolls - basically blackface dolls. Oddly enough, none of more recent adaptations, or any of the new books, feature the Gollywogs.

there's some suuuuuuuper racist shit in the Oz books. Sure, 1909, but it's still grossly racist. and sexist, at least the first couple ones. lots of little girls being told they should get back in the kitchen.

Yes. I loved those so much as a kid. I went back and reread them recently, and oh boy. the funny thing is that the author was a feminist and wrote the books to encourage girls to be adventurous and bold. But he was the 1909 version of a male feminist, and it does show.

I was watching The Breakfast Club for the first time since I was a kid and... jesus. At one point, Judd Nelson's character suggests that they close the library doors and "impregnate the cheerleader". He doesn't come out and say "gang rape" specifically, but that's clearly what he meant. Throw in calling the geeky guy a "faggot" as well.

I always noticed the racism and sexism in John Hughes movies, but the homophobia really hit me on the rewatches. Some Kind of Wonderful used to be my favorite but now I can't stomach the plot with Watts being mistaken for a lesbian. I wouldn't mind if it were portrayed as just the bullies being dicks about it, but the main characters also act like it's the worst thing in the world that anyone would think she was gay.
