I also found her very tedious, even when I felt bad for her. So much of what was wrong in her adult life was entirely her own fault (and so much of what went wrong during the show).

Do you mean the Leonard thing? I don’t think she is at fault for getting close to someone like him. It wasn’t a smart move, but that’s not to say she deserved to get manipulated.

AYRT - no, though she really should have listened when Alison told her he was shady. I more meant, like... she wants to be a more successful violinist? She wants first seat? But she doesn't turn up to rehersal on time??? Come on!

(Anonymous) 2019-03-09 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
I had assumed that Vanya got first seat in the end more because she went off the meds = could feel emotions more deeply = could put more emotions into her playing (instead of being technically skilled but emotionally flat) than whether or not she was tardy tbh.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-09 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
You recall the position of first seat only opened up because the original first seat violinist was murdered by Stalker McBoringFace? Not that I necessarily disagree with your point about going off the meds leading to an improvement in her skills, but the position was only available because, y'know, sudden violent death.

She was only late once that we saw. And some weird shit was going on it her life. I mean, even the fact that her father just died should've been enough to make her instructor lay off her about it. If she's late all the time, that's different, but given how sorry she is and how she's busting her ass to get there, she seems like she takes class seriously and isn't usually late.

Plus, she tells the first chair that she's been "hacking at the runs" in their music for weeks. Those aren't the words of someone who isn't putting in the effort. And when the first chair asks her how many years she's been "stuck at first chair" she says three years, which is apparently a lot longer than most of the others. That, to me, suggests she's a very diligent worker, since most people in her position who kept watching other people get promoted over them, would probably have quite by then. If anything I think the show is telling us that Vanya works harder than most at her music, but doesn't have as much progress to show for it. Which, for Vanya, feels like the story of her entire life in a mundane little nutshell.

Reading your last paragraph gave me so much Vanya feels ;o;

idk the way that the orchestra reacted with such an incredible amount of disdain when vanya was late gave me the impression that it was a regular occurrence? everyone in that auditorium was being OTT with their reactions, the conductor was RUDE AS HELL tbh.

i kind of don't like that whole "wow once she stopped taking her medications she felt so much better and her creative endeavors were so much better!" thing though just from that shitty "being sad makes you more creative/make better art!" narrative especially regarding medication, like i don't think that's what they were trying to say, but that's what i was getting from it, lol /tangent

You must not have siblings - if my estranged sister whom I hadn't seen in years showed up and started to dictate my love life and bossing me around, I would go hard the other way. Especially when the sister tends to the controlling side, literally.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-09 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I really don't get the 'well she should have listened to Allison when she said he was shady!'

Dude she and Allison BARELY know each other and Allison met him for like... five minutes? I mean, she was right, but there was no basis in her opinion at the time that made us as the audience believe she had a valid reason for being right.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-09 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm not gonna lie, I was really frustrated with her insistence on sticking her head in the sane about Leonard. That said, I think it's fairly understandable, too. Vanya's just really fucked up, for reasons that aren't at all her fault, and Leonard preys on her, which works because she's abused and vulnerable and horribly lonely and has very little sense of self-worth - all due to what other people have done to her. It's actually a bit surprising she's as able to argue against his manipulation at all.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-08 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean that sure is a take.

I found her incredibly tedious, yes. BUT.
She was drugged, brainwashed, 'influenced' in a way that she couldn't resist, and told repeatedly and with absolute conviction that she was useless, not special, utterly nothing. FOR YEARS.

I wasn't happy with 'i found out what happened and now i'm going to end the world' thing at all, but - she never would have had that violent and overwhelming break if Luther hadn't locked her up.

I think your vitrol at her is a bit much.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-09 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
She was murdering women before all of that.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-09 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
She was a CHILD, ffs.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-09 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I am sure that will console all those dead women. :/

(Anonymous) 2019-03-09 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Blame Reginald for that, not the literal child. She was what, four? Five, tops? It was an accident. Kids have tantrums.

Murdering women?

(Anonymous) 2019-03-09 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
She murdered at least 3 nannies for trying to get her to eat breakfast. That is why a robot nanny was created (who she tried to murder).

+1

If you think being locked in a soundproof undergound vault from your childhood nightmares, begging and screaming for help while your siblings stand outside and watch, doesn't lead to a snap of some kind, idk what to tell you.

Pretty much.

I didn't love her, and I was sympathetic to an extent, but jfc Luther locking her up really did not help things in any way shape or form, especially because he made it seem like he was going to take her in and then bam, knocks her out in a way that's got to be absolutely terrifying while she's already scared as shit(and upset because of what she did to Allison).

Also that's a sound-deprivation chamber, those things are supposed to be hellish to experience and she was locked up in one of those for months(years?) when she was four. And then had her memories re-written, but no big I guess??

Reginald is the real bad guy in all of this, but to say she wasn't horribly fucked up with the rest of them is false. The point is that they all are, because dear old daddy was a goddamn maniac.

Exactly. She had less ways to 'cope' because she started from a place of mental and emotional abuse; at least the other kids had the distraction of being 'special' and 'saving the world'.

But yes - they were all fucked up.

Vanya has repressed powers she gets it from sound and she just wanted to be like her siblings. Also Hargreevs bought the children , in the comics Hargreevs is a alien so he doesn't know things really also if you had super power siblings and you were made to think that you didn't have any and that you were nothing and being lied too and such you would be angry and upset.... Also this is a show and comic book she is worse in the comic books they have toned her down so much spoiler in the comic books she made pogo head explode.
