Fanfic Writers! How would you feel if someone posted a comment to tell you about a typo?

(Anonymous) 2019-03-17 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I generally ignore typos authors make. But I just found one where an author uses 'contempt' instead of 'content' so it completely changes the sentence (and actually makes me laugh a bit at how ridiculous it makes the sentence). Would it be rude to PM the author so they know?

The sentence: before he promptly fell asleep, safe and very, very contempt in Character's embrace.

I'm fine with little comments about typos, so long as that's not the ONLY thing in the comment and it's phrased in a polite way (i.e., "I really like XYZ, it's so good! (BTW small thing but you misspelled this in the first paragraph haha)") or w/e :)

I've been on both sides of it before, and TL;DR, I appreciated it and the people I've pointed errors out to also appreciated it.

On the writer, I made a grammatical error and didn't realize the way I'd phrased it made the sentence sound like something else. I was actually glad the reader pointed it because it gave me a better understanding of the English language. If I make a mistake, I definitely want to know so I can learn from it.

On the commenter side, a writer accidentally used the wrong character's name in one sentence, and I really loved the rest of the fic, so I was able to bury the lede and say, "OMG LOVE IT, but also this one tiny thing is not right." I felt kind of bad, but they were super nice about it and changed it right away.

Usually I'm first mortified to see whatever typo I've let slip, then I'm really grateful than someone took time to point it out so I can fix it. It helps that everytime it happened to me, people who pointed it out were just that: helpful, and not condescending jerks.
Only once someone told me "there are a few typo's" without pointing out which and where and I was all "dude not helpful!! as well tell me you think I can't spell for shit or what?" (because I've witnessed people being jerks like that on other people's fics too.)

They might legitimately not be aware they're doing it.

I once knew someone who thought the term was "good riddens". I don't know how they managed this in the age of spell check, but they did it anyway. Eventually I corrected them, but I wasn't exactly subtle about it so they got kinda mad...

Oops.

I've come across things like "for all intensive purposes" in fic and knew that, surely, the author honestly thought that's the way it should be written, and maybe they have a beta who thought that, too, but if I point it out, they're gonna be soooo embarrassed and I am a Midwesterner and can't do that to people and OH GOD WHAT TO I DO?

So I say nothing and slink away.

Shrug, thank them for the spot, correct it, and move on. (There's always something that gets past the proofread. No point fretting.)

I would be grateful for a typo point out, but some people wouldn't be. Probably safer to just ignore the typo.

BTW, the worst typo I saw recently was "waste deep in water". And no, they were not wading through a sewer.

Deeply, deeply embarrassed, but glad to get it fixed ASAP.

It'd only be rude if you're rude about it. There's the occasional author who's so up their own ass that they'll get cranky about it, but most people would be grateful to have the mistake pointed out so they can fix it.

Personally, I appreciate it so long as the correction isn't delivered in a snotty tone. But be sure to include info on where it is specifically. I'd get comments like "I think there's a typo in chapter 12" and... that's it.

I would be grateful as long as it was polite.

I think your best bet would be to make at least one positive statement about the fic, and then mention the typo. I mean, I know you're being helpful, and why should you have to spend extra effort complimenting the person before you help them. And of course you don't have to do anything. But if you do make that extra effort, it will dramatically minimize the chances of the author being anything other than appreciative.

No one's done it to me yet, but I'd be fine with it. I'm my only beta, so I don't catch everything!

Happy. I hate it when i'm looking over an older/posted fic and find i made a typo or grammar error or whatever, and am pleased if someone points out one I missed.

If i see one in a fic I'm reading, I'll kudo and leave my 'i liked this!' positive comment, then say 'teeny thing, (sentence with typo pasted in), I think you mean too instead of to (or whatever).'

I always past in the sentence or bit of the sentence if it's long, so the typo is easier to find.

I might be a bit disconcerted if someone leaves a comment about ONLY the typo 'like, what, was that the only thing that mattered?' but I love it when people point out my typos so I can fix it otherwise!

Let them know, but be nice about it.

Unless the author has specifically mentioned that they're not looking for concrit, you should be fine. It does suck if the typo is the only thing you're going to comment about though.
