When black women stop getting sent to jail for far less, then I'll feel sorry for them. Except I still wouldn't.

Honestly, though, gender is a factor, not just race. They are getting focused on while the men are getting off. And charges were just dropped against Smollett, who is black but a man. So it is complicated, and there are multiple factors at play.

I don't feel sorry for them personally because what they did was bad. But I also at the same time wish that the men were getting focused on too and am frustrated at the way gender is playing a role in this.

Are any of the men involved in this scandal celebrities?

(also, I do not believe for a second that Smollet got off because he's black, but really who knows wtf is going on with that whole thing)

(Anonymous) 2019-03-28 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
No, he got off because he's a male celebrity.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-28 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't believe that for a second, either

(Anonymous) 2019-03-28 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
You should. A lot of things are coming about the prosecutor 'recusing' herself and then going back on that saying the word was used 'colloquially' and having contact with both friends of the actor and his family members.

Yeah but the dude had 16 felony charges and the hatred of the whole criminal justice system of Chicago. It seems massively, extraordinarily unlikely that if you have a guy like that dead to rights, you're going to throw it away for no real reason, when convicting him is going to be popular and letting him go is going to cause you a massive slew of problems. It's not even like he's a huge celeb. He's a d-lister.

It doesn't pass the smell test. And that's not to say he's not guilty. Just that it doesn't make sense that he got away with it for no other reason than celebrity.

da

I heard that the state's attorney is a friend of his family and was able to work out a very favorable deal.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-29 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
The man had 16 felony charges for very visible, widely reported crimes. Getting all charges dropped is well past the bounds of "favorable deal".

He's a friend of Michelle Obama's. An aide/someone who worked with her worked directly with the DA.

Money talks. So does powerful friends.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-29 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Are you saying that the Obamas were involved in having Smollett's charges dropped? If not, what role do the Obamas play?

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
No idea. It could be as innocent as someone trying to do a favor for the Obamas.

But if people want to say, "No way, there has to be something else, it can't be favoritism!" then it's very logical to point to him having powerful connections.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-28 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
IDK. Someone always has it worse. This particular situation aside, I'm not sure that's a great metric to use in general.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-28 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
When black trans women stop...wait! Black, disabled trans women. WAIT! Black disabled gay trans women. How far down can we go?

(Anonymous) 2019-03-28 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not at all unreasonable to point out that the American criminal justice system is wildly and viciously and disproportionately unfair to black people, and poor people, and poor black people. What point are you even trying to make here?
