Not all creators can do both worldbuilding (the forest) and characterization (the trees).

(Anonymous) 2019-04-07 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
No, but the first part of the story actually has some solid characterization (no new ground is being tread, as far as the character archetypes go, but they were consistent and had just enough depth to be interesting), followed by some actual character development. There were parts of the character development that went in not entirely expected ways and that could have been very interesting, and then pfffffft, timeskip and literally all of that development vanished entirely.

What the actual fuck.

Post-timeskip gave us a look at some of the fascinating social and political implications (and some outright statements), so I can't hate on it entirely, but fucking hell, man. It's not that the man wasn't capable of writing a character arc, it's that he suddenly decided it was too much work and we got Character Development Limbo Hell forever.

This was a foreshadowing of how all of the worldbuilding-type plot threads would be resolved, which was a lolwhuthahahaha ending. Which needs to be stabbed and burned at the stake.

Naruto is as bad as Harry Potter (or Fruits Basket, to stay in animanga territory) when it comes to pairing up everyone in neat little het relationships no matter if they make sense or not and I hate it so much.

This. SO much.

Did Gaara end up with anybody? I thought he was the only one who didn’t.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-07 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, he wasn't with anyone. Tenten, Rock Lee, and Shino aren't paired up either at the end of Naruto.

DA. (possible spoilers) I would say Fruba is much worse than either because there were tons of m/m and f/f built up that just get dropped. Even Akito is revealed as female, thus making Shigure/Akito m/f as well.

As much as people like to claim HP and Naruto were ~soo gay~ they didn't have characters actually having stated crushes on other male characters like Fruba did. Hell, it's listed as a "good anime" by that Christian anime site because the characters "overcame their homosexuality and became good hets."

I mean, I'd understand if they IDed as bi, because all bi characters should be celebrating and the discourse about 'bi characters in m/f relationships don't count as LGBT anymore' is gross but it's more like it's considered a silly little thing that they get over by getting into proper m/f relationships.

(And considering that IS a Japanese view see: romantic two girl friendship, then it probably is.)

Hettily Ever After is, I have decided, the trope that I hate the most. So. Much. Hate. Why would - I can't even. (Don't even start with Fruits Basket, that entire travesty needs to be set on fire.)

Your P.S. is spot on. I absolutely love his worldbuilding in Naruto . The world is so messed up (Konoha itself is like a house of horrors). The ending was way too innocent and upbeat and hopeful for what had come before.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-07 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I was so annoyed at the ending lmao. I love the messed up way the world was and the ending was just like 'and now it's all cool!' yeahno, I don't want that!

(Anonymous) 2019-04-07 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
The ending made me want to throw everything through a window, what the actual fuck was that, there was so much to unpack. The politics and the logistics and the social implications that were right there to explore and.... what. No payoff. Absolutely no payoff.

I should have seen it coming after the three year timeskip and all the character development that actually HAD happened vanished into nothing for no good reason oh my god.

THIS IS EXACTLY WHY WE HAVE FANFICTION.

I'm pretty sure Kishimoto had a stroke or something halfway through and just completely forgot what the hell he was doing.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-07 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
His worldbuilding was good until. I dunno. Halfway where kishimoto just decided FUCK POLITICS AND HARD WORK. NARUTO AND SASUKE ARE GODS NOW and dropped the whole having a society of child soldiers is fucked up and then had Naruto become the most useless Hokage ever. Although that might be the Bort writer’s fault.

also forever salty that Sakura deserved better than she got.

I've never seen/read Naruto, but imo, the best fandoms for creativity are the ones with interesting worldbuilding and frustrating character development.. you're doing it right! ;D
