Movie Recs?

(Anonymous) 2019-04-10 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
HI FS

I'm going on holiday with a friend soon and we are looking for movie recs to watch together! We've had good luck asking FS for stuff before and were hoping to maybe check in again. Some general stuff about what we're into:

LIKED: Galaxy Quest, The LEGO Movie, The Iron Giant, 21 Jump Street (2012), Hot Fuzz, Idiocracy, 12 Angry Men, Men in Black, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, What We Do in the Shadows, Bring It On, Clueless, Sister Act 2

HATED: Bridesmaids, Pitch Perfect, Mad Max (1979), The Prince of Egypt, The Emperor's New Groove, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Clerks

We'd love any recs, if any of this reminds you of other fun movies :D

Empire Records? I love it, but since your likes and dislikes seem all over the place lol, not sure you guys will.

Hello, this is the friend! Would you say Empire Records is similar in tone / style to Clerks, if you've seen that? It comes off vaguely similar in terms of setting, but I was wondering more about writing or tone.

And our likes are basically things that are fun / comedy, mostly. Buddy cop movies, animated movies, comedies, those are usually good in general... I'd say the vast majority of those we've watched, we really enjoyed. The ones we didn't like we disliked for plot or character related reasons than because of the genre.

I have seen Clerks but I'm not sure I'd put them at the same level, because Clerks seemed to have a bit of 'teen boy' humour in my opinion while Empire Records is more... goofy humour mixed with sort of coming-of-age type stories for all the MCs? Not sure if that helps, sorry!

DA

I love Empire Records which is nostalgic and silly with a great soundtrack and think Clerks is meh.

If you liked Hot Fuzz you'd probably like Shaun of the Dead, and The World's End. They're all written by the same guys.

More brit comedy: I personally liked the 2007 version of Death at a Funeral, and Kingsman: The Secret Service.

Similar-ish to Bring It On and Clueless: 10 Things I Hate About You, Stick It, Not Another Teen Movie, She's The Man.

Hi, this is the friend!

We've actually watched both Shaun of the Dead and World's End! Didn't really care for them as much - the reason we loved Hot Fuzz was less the style of it and more just how tight the writing was and how it played on the Buddy Cop tropes in a pretty refreshing way. And the whole 'there's always something new to spot every time you rewatch it' aspect, which is fun. I'd actually think a movie that's more similar to them in tone would be Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, especially when it comes to pacing.

Death at a Funeral actually sounds sort of interesting, we haven't tried that before. I did catch Kingsman in cinemas and aggressively disliked it, but that's, well, another story, haha. It's not a bad rec though, I can see why you'd suggest it!

And Stick It is something I haven't seen before! We've caught the other ones, so if it's similar to the rest, it should be a pretty good time. Thanks! :D

Second vote for Kingsman: Secret Service. I also liked the sequel, though I don't think it was as popular? It's just one of those cracktastic movies where it's way over the top, but that's the whole point.

Oldies but goodies:

Gentleman Prefer Blondes - great performances by Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe
The Mummy and The Mummy Returns.

Re: Movie Recs?

Hello, friend here!

I'm afraid Kingsman is a definite non-watch! I honestly detested it due to personally hating the tropes it had and the entire plot, to the point when I was actively hoping the hero would get killed at the end and nearly walked out of the movie theatre. And this is coming from someone who really loves over the top action movies. Like, it is impossible to overstate how much I hate this movie.

The Mummy is an absolutely fantastic suggestion though - it's been years since I watched it, and I loved it. I never actually watched the third movie either, but it's definitely been long enough that a rewatch would be a ton of fun. Personally I have it in the same 'good fun' category as the original PotC, so a theme park ride movie night might be fun to try too!

I've also never seen Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, but in general I haven't watched as much Marilyn Monroe movies as I'd like. I did actually really enjoy Some Like It Hot, so that might be fun to give a go. Thanks!

The Usual Suspects? It has a pretty big twist so be careful searching for it if you haven't seen it yet.

Oh, great rec I think! Turns out one of us has seen it, and the other one hasn't, so it should be fun to give that a try together.

Hmm. I love Galaxy Quest and Men in Black, but didn’t hate Pitch Perfect or Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and haven’t seen a bunch of the others.

That said, some of my favorite comfort rewatches are Penelope, The Blues Brothers, Stardust, The Full Monty, The Mask, Megamind, both Deadpool movies, Enchanted, Hocus Pocus, Ever After, Galavant (a tv series, but a short one), Ever After, Waking Ned Devine, School of Rock, and Robin Hood: Men in Tights.

I’d be better at filtering stuff out if I knew what you disliked about the films on your hate list, but I hope you end up with more things to enjoy.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-10 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, thanks so much! Those are some fantastic recs - we've actually watched a good few of those movies (Stardust / Megamind / Enchanted / School of Rock / Hocus Pocus / Robin Hood) and enjoyed all of those quite a fair bit even if they aren't in our top hits, so we'll definitely be checking out the others since if they're in a similar vein. Penelope and Waking Ned Devine both actually look really fun based on the trailers; I'm surprised I've never heard about them before.

And in the dislikes category, it's not about the genre or media that we disliked, it's more... we tried discussing it, and most of those struck us as very much 'style / wittiness over substance'. (Besides Prince of Egypt, that one we just disagreed with the whole religion thing.)

But thanks again for the ones you recced!

For whatever reason, the first thing that popped into my mind after seeing Galaxy Quest, Hot Fuzz, and Men In Black is that you *might* enjoy Mystery Men (1999), Dracula: Dead and Loving It (1995), and Evolution (2001) but you didn't like Clerks so maybe not. :P

Re: Movie Recs?

(Anonymous) 2019-04-10 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
Based on trailers and looking up very short non-spoilery synopses online, all of those seem like they're definitely worth checking out, at least! Humour and stuff like that is all subjective, but given that we really liked Ben Stiller in Zoolander, DodgeBall and Tropic Thunder, Mystery Men seems like a pretty solid bet. Thanks a ton!

I also hated Mad Max but I LOVED Mad Max Fury Road. It's an entirely different animal.

Unfortunately one of us has watched that (er, I mean, I've watched it) and reaaaaaally did not like it at all. It is definitely an entirely different animal, I agree! It's just an entirely different animal that I also didn't care much for. The action of course was stellar, and so was the editing, so I will give it credit for that anyway. Thanks for the rec, though!

You hated Emperors New Groove??

Yeah then I've got nothing for you.

Different anon, I'd love to know why OP didn't enjoy The Emperor's New Groove; this is the first time I've ever seen anyone state they didn't like it and am very curious to see a negative review for it.

Well, that is an eclectic bunch of movies

(Anonymous) 2019-04-10 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
For goofy-spoofiness: Spaceballs, Top Secret
For action with aliens and some humor: The Fifth Element
For well-written, mounting intensity dramas: All the Presidents Men, Apollo 13
For light and quotable comedy: Legally Blonde
For feel-good triumph: Wimbledon, Center Stage, Stick It

It's been awhile since I've seen it, but maybe Paul? (Hot Fuzz actors road tripping in the the US meet a space alien): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZvsP3_t2Sk

Heart and Souls is a funny, sort of rom-commy but not *really* 90s movie with Robert Downey Jr. as the man who finds out his childhood imaginary friends...are actually ghosts who were supposed to be trying to take care of unfinished business. The trailer doesn't really do it justice but the cast is great: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0cxmmAqxw8

Oooh, I really like the look of those! Paul looks like it might actually be a great time, and Heart and Souls has somehow totally gone under my radar. It honestly looks fantastic, and young RDJ seems like he was acting the hell out of that role. Thanks a ton for both of them, they certainly fit into the sort of things we'd like to see. And I appreciate the trailer links too!
