I read this like 4 times and I'm still not sure what you're saying.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-14 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I think what OP is saying is that FS got them hyped for Wonder Woman and it turned out to merely be a perfectly enjoyable superhero flick rather than a groundbreaking cinematic experience, and they're worried about repeating that with Captain Marvel.
I wonder if OP realises other sources for reviews exist?

(Anonymous) 2019-04-14 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Does anyone genuinely expect a capeshit flick to be a groundbreaking cinematic experience?

(Anonymous) 2019-04-14 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Does OP expect a "a groundbreaking cinematic experience", though? Because there's a difference between that and simply a great action flick, which is what OP actually indicates in the secret.

They don't actually specify anything at all about what their level of expectation was, unless I'm missing something?

(Anonymous) 2019-04-14 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I took "amazing MCU female superhero" as my guideline.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-14 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
OP thinks that people overhyped Wonder Woman and is worried that people are doing the same for Captain Marvel

at least that's how I interpreted it

tbf, expectation begets disappointed. So going in expecting something will be amazing is... kinda doing that disappointment to yourself.

I actually really liked Wonder Woman, but I agree that its probably the same people excited about a female lead.

Everyone's tastes are going to be different. You have to figure it out for yourself. Personally, I thought Wonder Woman was really good but Captain Marvel was better.

I actually really liked both. Wonder Woman wasn't as amazing for me as everyone made out but it was still the best DCEU (or whatever we're calling it these days) offering I'd seen and is probably still the best for me after Shazam!

I liked Captain Marvel a little more but full disclosure it's because there wasn't really a love story (though the love story in WW isn't intrusive or terrible) in the traditional sense, as in if there is any love story it's the love/support for her friend and her friend's daughter. I found that really refreshing.

Honestly I feel like it's mostly just and overall nice feeling people have that there are two films with a female lead that are being generally well received rather than seeing them being dumped on and used as an argument as to why superheroine films don't work. Despite the fact there's countless examples of shitty male-led superhero flicks and yet they still get made without much of a dent to their reputation.

Tbh when it comes to media using other people's opinions isn't really going to work because their tastes might not match up at all. It's why I don't bother reading reviews for movies I want to see because they most-likely wont have the same taste as me so I'll watch it and form my own opinion instead.

But in general I don't fall for internet hype/hatred because it's usually always overblown.

Wonder Woman: A little better than other DC movies.

Captain Marvel: A little better than other Marvel movies.

Both have WTF plot-hole moments, but it's a superhero movie.

Raving 'about her' is not the same as raving about a movie. That WW movie was okay at best. Gal as Wonder Woman was fucking incredible.

See?

(Anonymous) 2019-04-14 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a good distinction to make, but honestly, I don't recall many people saying that about the WW movie.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-14 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Agree so hard. She was perfect. I'm so sad the rest of the movie was such blah.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-14 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally, I really enjoyed Wonder Woman. It's probably sitting somewhere around eighth on my list of favorite comic book movies of the current era.

But Captain Marvel just didn't engage me at all. I found it incredibly meh. In fact, I hate to say it, but it's probably my least favorite of the MCU movies I've seen. (I haven't seen the Hulk movies or the first two Thor movies.)

(Anonymous) 2019-04-14 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I like both WW and CM, and CM a bit more, but I don't think either live up to their hype.

I'll admit for CM it's part because I'm more invested in the MCU and I wasn't fond of the prequel-like aspects. The deal with the Tesseract, how Fury lost his eye, Coulson... So the main reason I went in excited and came out a bit let down wasn't because of the movie in and of itself, but because of its place in the MCU.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-14 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing about WW was that Gail Gadot was perfect in it, but the rest of the movie was dumb. And the romance stuff was dumb.

The thing about CM is that the whole movie is fun. Also zero romance (unless you headcanon the bff's as romantic, which I can totally see) and zero sexualization.

I mean it's not ground breaking cinema, but it was a solid fun movie staring a kickass lady with no romance or sex and good casting.

Even a very good movie can be a let down if it gets over-hyped to you, I get you OP. Still, people are going to want to gush, so the best you can do is try not to let that raise your expectations too high. I haven't seen Captain Marvel yet, but a movie doesn't get to a billion dollars on hollow hype, so even if it's not spectacular, you know it's still got to be entertaining.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-15 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
I heard there's a lot of missed opportunity because the majority of the movie doesn't actually take place on Earth while she's in the Airforce, and I'm REALLY hoping that's true, because then I'll finally have a female character in the MCU I can write for.
