I don't understand why anyone but Christians are allowed to have pride in their faith.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-15 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I find them all equally irritating and off-puting ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

and for extra controversy, I'm counting atheism as a faith

(Anonymous) 2019-04-16 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-15 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't understand why anyone but white people are allowed to have pride in their race, but white people can't. What's wrong with White Pride?"

"I don't understand why anyone but straight people are allowed to have pride in their sexuality, but straight people can't. Where are my straight parades?"

"I don't understand why anyone but men are allowed to have pride in their gender. When's Men's Day?!"

Usually, the answer boils down to the fact that in the current Western circumstances and history that most of these discussions, and this current discussion of Pratt happens in, all the other groups are minorities and had to fight oppressors to get any social status they currently have. Whereas Christianity, straight people, and men were always the default-persons. Generally speaking, the pride isn't really in just being the thing, it's being the thing in spite of the default opposition and having dealt with oppression.

Though I may be giving your comment too much benefit of the doubt.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-15 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
And no, before it has to be said, a bunch of people going "man, you in particular, the way you're evangelizing your religion is really annoying" is NOT systemic Christian oppression.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-15 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
The key thing you're missing is the belief that only people who evangelize in that way really count as Christians (for those kinds of Christians)

Are you really comparing white supremacism to Christians saying they're proud of their faith?

(Anonymous) 2019-04-16 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
No, I'm comparing people who might say "I'm proud to be white" to people who might say "Godfidence".

There's nothing intrinsically wrong with either of those things.

But context and history matters, and that's why both parties would get more backlash for them than someone going "I'm proud to be gay."

Are you really implying that Christianity has not been a major oppressive force in the last 1700 years of Western Civilization?

A certain type of Christian feels like they can force their religion on others while at the same time no one else is allowed to have beliefs different than theirs and get their beliefs respected. Chris Pratt, unfortunately, belongs to that small but vocal group of Christians.

This.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-15 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't care if you're a Christian but if you're a socially conservative fundamentalist Christian, I don't care for that

(Anonymous) 2019-04-16 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I don't care for that shit at all...

(Anonymous) 2019-04-15 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand why adherents to a faith that specifically admonishes its followers to *not* be ostentatious about said faith feels the need to cry persecution unless they're allowed to plaster everything around them with Yay Jesus stickers.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-16 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-15 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a Christian, but I find it off-putting if anyone of any religion is blatantly about it. (I mean beyond wearing things their religion tells them they need to wear or whatever.) I just think of it as such an intensely personal choice that I get uncomfortable with anyone proselytizing or wearing shirts like he is there or telling others what they should or shouldn't do to be moral. Just keep it between yourself and whatever deity you worship unless you are with people who share your faith.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-16 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I respect this feeling but also think it's a little bit hilarious because the entire idea of religion as a private individual choice/identity is a very christian construction with roots in the irreconcilable protestant/catholic divisions that wracked Europe and were imported to the Americas, and to some degree in older epiphany/conversion narratives, and the entire realm of discourse around justification by faith (sola or not)

(Anonymous) 2019-04-16 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Because if you criticize Islam you're a bigot. So Chris Pratt is going to get more heat for thanking his god than Linda Sarsour is for advocating violence against a survivor of female genital mutilation.

how many times is he roughed up in airports tho

Christian evangelicals are annoying and need to STFU

(Anonymous) 2019-04-16 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
The man supports a church that is vehemently anti-LGBT and came up with the weakest argument against that imaginable. He's a douche.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-16 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
He's allowed to be proud. Pushing it on others and using it as a personal defense makes him shitty. This applies to all faiths.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-16 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
I don't understand why the religion that has dominated most of western European and American culture for centuries feels like they're legit the underdog.
