101 I hardly ever identify with female characters in any medium, but that's mostly because I'm pretty mentally androgynous gender-wise, and most female characters are either too feminine for me to relate to or they're overcompensating in the other direction.

105 I can totally see that comparison.

115 My gay friend hated Leeron because he's such a horrible stereotype of a gay man, and I have to agree. I hate the way the Japanese view homosexuality sometimes.

116 This is basically exactly how I see this series. I hate the shipping wars surrounding it (almost killed any enjoyment I had left for the series, which was only really awesome at the very beginning anyway).

117 I hate Oasis because they basically destroyed what Creation records was, and because of them nobody will ever care about Ride, or any of the other vastly superior bands on that label.

126 Words cannot express how disgusted I am that some people are apparently only interested in history if they can imagine notable historical figures having sex with each other. I mean, I'm a history major and the closest I ever got to that was my weird crush on Napoleon, but that's not the same as reading the French Revolution and its aftermath through slash goggles. Whatever happened to just being interested in history? Is it really that boring if you don't have a historical slash pairing to fantasize about?
tl;dr yaoi fangirls ruining everything I enjoy once again.

140 That's just as lame, sorry.

141 I grew up watching American cartoons, and I don't think anime is superior. And I don't watch anime series just for the fact that they're anime. I have genres that I'm interested in, like for example, science fiction in general. And it just so happens that along with all the book and live action series, sci-fi anime exists. If something like Legend of Galactic Heroes existed in American live action I would still think it's the greatest thing ever.

144 But he's such a small dude. It's like every character he plays is overcompensating for that fact.

150 Every American newspaper is owned by a corporation except two -- The New York Times and the Washington Post. (LA Times used to be independent until it got bought out by the Chicago Tribune). There's really no difference between cable news and newspapers. Enjoy your McNews.

I don't get it either. It's like some people can't look at something without sex and romance being invovled. Everybody has to be fucking somebody. It's lame.

I mean I guess I can see slashing historical figures for the lulz, I do that with fandom already (I've never been a serious slasher). But geez. It's not like I think with my twat.

Re: 126

(Anonymous) 2008-09-21 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand the lolz. But so many people take it very seriously. O_o; And seriously, I think some people are addicted to shipping and slash. If you can't watch tv commericals or childrens cartoons or history without creating porn from it, you've gone too far.

I think the reason why I don't get it is because I'm actually getting laid. That sounds like I'm bragging, but I think lack of an actual sex life is really the reason, most of the time.

101 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-09-21 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm probably on a similar wavelength. I actually hate most women in real life and am friends with mostly guys so essentially finding many women to relate to becomes a hard problem to begin with. As a child I found myself associating at first the most with Utena, and Chris is an extension of Utena's character.

OMG HISTORY IS SRS BSNS!!

Honestly, she found something that made American history interesting to her. So now she knows--really knows-- about American history. Better than her not knowing or caring at all. In my experience, you can't ship historical figures unless you know a fuckton about them to begin with, so she probably knows just as much about Hamilton and Jefferson as you do, maybe more.

Also, I ship more people in American history than you can shake a stick at, but that doesn't mean that I don't have an equal interest in just learning the history.

Re: 126

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2008-09-21 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I just think it's sad that people don't have the attention span or enough sense to generate interest for the material. I have a degree in history, so I take it personally when people either don't care about the subject I spent so many years of my life engrossed in, and that they apparently have to resort to seriously imagining historical figures fucking each other to generate any ounce of interest in their own history. If you can't see how this is sad then I just don't know what to tell you.

I would rather her not care about American history than be all OMG JEFFERSON IS A BISHIE!!!111 just to avoid the embarrassment.

Taking it personally when people aren't interested in your area of expertise is a little asinine, don't you think? I'm sure all those Bachelors of Science at your University sure resented the fact that you were sitting around talking about Hegel and Historiography when you COULD have been learning their very favorite subject: Astrophysics!

Astrophysics actually happens my husband's personal interest.

But yeah, like I said earlier, I don't care if people aren't into history. I mean, I hate math. That doesn't make it necessary for them to defile it with bad slash pairings.

Because some people just aren't interested in your discipline. I love academics in general, but there are some subjects that I just can't bring myself to bring a crap about. So what if history is one of those for someone else, and they found a way for them to enjoy it? What does it matter to you?

I hate it when people are shallow enough to have to resort to shameless sexual self-fulfillment just to get themselves through responsibilities and obligations in life. It disgusts me.

And it's not exactly fair considering that it's practically impossible for people to do this kind of shit outside of the liberal arts. (It's not like I can slash the square root of pi with the number 3 or whatever, even if I wanted to do that sort of thing to feign interest.) So once again liberal arts people get shit upon.

Re: 126

[identity profile] jaclynhyde.livejournal.com 2008-09-21 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, see, I just say if they find something that lets them enjoy history, and maybe get more interested in it for its own sake, go for it. Then again, I seem to be more "live and let live" than most of fandom in general.

No, it's not the same for liberal arts. So? Some people who aren't interested in my discipline go out and discourage use of life-saving psychiatric drugs, or say that depression is "all in your head--just snap out of it!". All disciplines have their drawbacks (and I'd say the liberal arts have a lot more to worry about from the people who assume only the sciences are useful and liberal arts can be bullshitted through).

I'm just confused why you can't just ignore people like this--either they enjoy the slash and stay out of serious historical discussions/scholarship/what have you, or they become interested enough that they're part of the field for its own sake.

Also, your icon is adorable.

I hate it when people are shallow enough to have to resort to shameless sexual self-fulfillment just to get themselves through responsibilities and obligations in life. It disgusts me.

Ew, people...think about sex when they're supposed to be thinking about other things? Dear lord, what's WRONG with these perverts? Who DOES that?!

...Of course, this naturally follows from you apparently finding it "sad" that some people can't pay attention to everything you deem worthy of paying attention to. I'm sure everybody this applies to is just broken up about it.

Personally, I need a lot of mental stimulation to get my sluggish brain working so I can focus/recall/brane in general. The end result being that running the mental adult theatre in the background frequently helps me ROCK whatever I'm doing. e.g. Completing four-hour study blocks (as opposed to struggling just to focus on the textbook for twenty minutes at a time), or managing an essentially flawless lunch/dinner hour at the restaurant I work at (as opposed to one plagued by my memory lapses and space-outs).

I'd feel bad for using sex to get through my responsibilities and obligations, except I really prefer my customers happy and my calculus homework done. So I guess I'll just have to live with the fact that I don't have the mental fortitude to do things the proper way.

P.S. Erm, if the liberal arts have historical figures to slash...well, some of said historical figures were scientists and mathmaticians. Who would need to literally slash numbers? Historical geek!sex FTW!

And, dude. If there isn't Newton/Leibniz out there? There damn well should be.

some people can't pay attention to everything you deem worthy of paying attention to.

So now you're basically implying that history is unimportant and it's shouldn't be mandatory to know the history of your own country. Europeans have one way over on Americans in this regard.

Ew, people...think about sex when they're supposed to be thinking about other things? Dear lord, what's WRONG with these perverts? Who DOES that?!

It has nothing to do with morals, it's just sad for anyone to constantly obsess about ANYTHING. Not to mention that you should have the self-control to think about something else once in awhile.

Re: Such moral outrage!

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2008-09-23 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
So now you're basically implying that history is unimportant and it's shouldn't be mandatory to know the history of your own country.

Most people should have a general mental sketch, yes, and know major/influential events. Although the reality is that most don't; and while I'm guessing you could build an argument for detrimental effects over time to a society that doesn't know its own history, I don't think most find that their lack of clue harms them on a short-term basis.

But I'm inclined to believe that comment was more personal butthurt over someone, "defiling," your favourite subject than it was over how important it may be to know your own history. Because if THAT was the primary concern, I don't think you'd object so much to the manner in which she acquired the knowledge. I certainly know I smiled when I got to that secret, as did many here, since we all probably recognize finding that, "hook," of personal interest in a subject (whether that hook is in any way sexual or not).

Me, I was thinking of how I actually got into ninth grade social studies by obsessing over what a tool Marx really was, and how his character may have influenced his work; that's what the secret made me think of. I find it interesting that YOUR reaction was to feel that the way in which she connected to the material was somehow wrong.

Not to mention that you should have the self-control to think about something else once in awhile.

(Well, this was ridiculous from the outset, where you assumed from one fandom secret that someone made about using slash to get through a subject she finds boring that she is - to quote from lower down the thread - "completely driven by sex." Somehow, I very much doubt that assumption is true.

But, well, even it was...)

So you think people, "should," think about "something else once in awhile." Assuming it harms no one: why? That's a very interesting, "should." Why do you care what anyone privately thinks about so long as they're doing what they're supposed to?

Seems to me that's very much a, "should," that's morally based.

I don't know. I'm a math student, and if someone managed to become interested in math because they slashed Gödel and Hilbert, I'd be amused as hell.

For me it's more of the concepts and formulas than the people that made it up. Like the natural log of e is more like they were made for each other so they are one.

126: Dude, reading over your comments... exactly why is adding romance or sex to something, straight or gay or otherwise, "defiling" it? Do you actually think of (gay?) sex as such a dirty, dirty thing?

Also, it uh. It says she used this to get interested enough to pass her tests. I personally find that history bores me to tears unless I can find myself connecting with historical figures as people, with personalities, "backstory," etcetera, and I tend to ship all characters from anything just for the fun of it. Why... exactly is this so inherently filthy? If it would have helped me on my exams, I would have freaking embraced it.

Also, 115: You do know that even stereotypes have people that are that way in real life, right? The point of the secret is that by going all the way to the far side of the stereotype, Leeron obviously had no shame in who and what he was. Though it did make him outright camp, they balanced that by making him so confident in him and also making him completely kickass in and of himself. It definitely makes him come across as a stereotype, but he's far from being a negative stereotype.
ext_81845: penelope, my art/character (so what?)

Re: 126, 115

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2008-09-22 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's sad that the only way someone can possibly connect to a person in the past is in a sexual manner. I think it's sad when individuals are completely driven by sex. There's nothing wrong with sex (I'm married and I keep an open relationship, if that's any indication) but it's called MODERATION and it'd be nice if people could balance it out in their lives instead of being SEXSEXSEXSEX all of the fucking time. That kind of sexual obsession over characters or REAL FUCKING PEOPLE (for Chrissakes) does cheapen things.

115 I've never met a gay man like that and I've known a lot of gay men. I find it offensive that Leeron constantly hits on straight men because that's a negative stereotype in the gay community. But Gurren Lagaan's characters are all basically modified stereotypes anyway.
